Sunday 13th March Lancashire Under 16s at Blackpool North Shore (Won 6½ to 1½)
A great start to the season for our Under 16s team who beat Lancashire Under 16s
Sunday 10th July Cheshire Senior Ladies at Ringway at 10.15am (Won 11½ to ½)
The Under 16 team came out tops against the Cheshire Senior Ladies team. Playing foursomes in the morning, the Under 16s won all 4 of the matches though 3 of these went to the last green. In the afternoon there were many individual successes and despite having to give shots and courtesy shots in some of the matches the boys won 7 of the 8 games against some very good players. There were many fine comments from the members of the Cheshire Seniors Ladies Team regarding what great golf, good sportsmanship and etiquette the boys had displayed. It was also very good to see all the boys supporting their team colleagues as their matches finished, especially Tom Doran who came back from dormie 3 down to half his match on the last hole
Friday 22nd July Cheshire Seniors at Wilmslow (Halved 6 matches each)
A very good match and an improvement for the Under 16s after the thrashing they were given by the Seniors last year.
All matches played in a very competitive spirit and some strong lessons for the juniors in how to finish a match when they are ahead, something many of them failed to do. The after match discussions were full of stories of comebacks from the seniors most notably Roy and Don who were 5 down after 7 holes but halved their match in the morning and from Steve coming back from 3 down with 3 to play to halve with 3 birdies in the last 3 holes. Thankfully some of the juniors hung on and used their stamina on a very hot day to great effect. Particular credit to Kieran Underwood and Jack Lowe who were the only ones to win both their matches. Also well done to Luke Donnelly and Jack MacLeod who were undefeated on the day.
Monday 15th August Staffordshire Under 16s at Crewe (Won 6½ to 3½)
In the first ever match between Cheshire and Staffordshire Under 16s, played at Crewe Golf Club, Cheshire narrowly triumphed.
The first match between Luke Donnelly of Cheshire and Harry Fearn of Staffordshire went to the 18th where Harry scored a birdie 3 to win the last hole and level the match. There were then convincing wins for Sam Long, Oscar Doran and Josh Turnock from the top five of the matches as well as Dan Gibson and Kieran Underwood from the last five matches.
Jack Macleod and James Dewhurst were both unlucky not to win their last hole in their matches against Yas Oakly and James Lowndes of Staffordshire respectively, and both these matches ended all square.
Tom Alford and Zarak Curley won their matches for Staffordshire Under 16s.
Plans are already in hand for a return fixture next Summer.
Friday 19th August Yorkshire Under 16s at Woodsome Hall, Huddersfield (Lost 7½ to 10½)
The first defeat of the season for the Under 16s. Overall it was very close with 11 of the 18 matches going to the 18th green, where we didn’t do as well as the home team. Final score 10.5:7.5 to Yorkshire.
Some great play in heavy rain, on a wonderful golf course. It was also a big help to have Peter Barber there all day today. His view about what he saw of these boys in action will make interesting reading as to who we should invest time in going forward to build an even better Boys Team
Monday 22nd August Cheshire U14's at Vale Royal (U16s 3½ to U14s 4½)
Playing against the Under 14s, the Under 16s had to give shots in all 8 matches and found it just too tough to cope with the Under 14s some of whom will definitely be playing for the Under 16s next season. The first and last matches were very close, with others being much closer games than the score suggests.
The future is certainly bright for the County as many of the Under 16s are young enough to play for the same team next year and there are also several members of the squad who are now good enough to challenge for places on the Boys County team next season. Those staying in the Under 16s and those joining will no doubt make competition even fiercer for places in the team next year when we hope to be playing the same matches plus possibly one more County Under 16 side.
Andrew and David would especially like to thank all the boys who have played for them this season and also their parents for getting them all to each game on time and in good form. The team spirit this year has been the best ever, and we will work this as we look forward to going through 2017 unbeaten.
