Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs
At the 9th. AGM of the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs Ltd. held on Tuesday 4 February 2021, I delivered an address which can be found in the Minutes of the meeting which will be posted on the website shortly. The following is a short precis of that address and a look forward to the season ahead.
I am grateful to the Board for giving me the opportunity to try and lead the County for a further 12 months, and to the Deputy President for his patience in waiting for another year. We will try and rearrange the Centenary events that we had intended to hold during 2020, and with the rollout of the vaccination programme, we can only hope that normality will return in time for the County to run the events we have planned for the 2021 season, although the present situation is making it very likely that holding the earlier events in the calendar will continue to be a challenge.
2020 was an incredibly difficult year for all our Affiliated Clubs and I think it is only right that the County should attempt to assist them in some small way by releasing some of the reserves built up over the years. I am delighted that to date we have been able to return £77,000 to the Clubs with another £8,000 to be sent, and a further £20,000 has been made available to our Junior Committee. I am delighted by the letters and comments we have received and it is clear that our Clubs appreciate the gesture. Young people are the future of our sport and if these funds can help in some way to assist those young people to take up the game, then we will all reap the benefits in due course. There is evidence that the lockdown last year may have persuaded many more people to take up or resume golf as their form of exercise, and it is to be hoped that we can continue to hold on to these new members when normality returns.
We do not yet have a date for when we can return to the golf course but the County Diary for 2021 has been completed, and we can only hope that circumstances will allow us to complete as many of the Tournaments, Championships and matches as possible. The same relates to the hugely popular Life Members’ Meetings of which 8 are planned for 2021.
The County is still within its Centenary Year and we intend to try and reorganise the Club Conferences in the West and East of the County and the Centenary Dinner in October. The Centenary County Championship will be held at Delamere Forest GC in July, 100 years on from the first County Championship at the same venue.
Let us hope that 2021 will eventually bring us some form of normality and the opportunity to enjoy the game that we love. We may have soreness in our arms from our vaccinations but let’s have hope in our hearts and above all, please stay safe.
