Success for Cheshire County Golf Partnership
THE team behind a campaign to encourage more people in Cheshire to take up golf is celebrating a top award for its efforts.
The Cheshire County Golf Partnership was presented with one of the prizes up for grabs at the ninth annual Cheshire & Warrington Sports Partnership Awards, hosted by Sport Cheshire at Eaton Park, near Chester.
The evening was a celebration of those who go the extra mile for community sport across Cheshire and Warrington and was attended by more than 150 guests.
The Cheshire CGP had been nominated in the National Governing Body category after a year in which clubs across the county have held special taster sessions and coaching courses to make it as easy as possible to take up golf or return to the sport.
Under the stewardship of the Cheshire County Golf Partnership, PGA professionals have delivered the scheme which aims to make golf as accessible as possible to people of all abilities, while also highlighting the health benefits and social life to be gained from joining a club.
The awards night acknowledges organisations that have shown “a significant enhancement in its delivery to the residents of Chester and Warrington.” Also nominated in the category were Badminton England and the Cheshire County Football FA.
More than 350 potential golfers have taken advantage of the schemes on offer.
The Cheshire County Golf Partnership was represented by Melanie Flude, north west regional development officer for the English Golf Union and the English Women’s Golf Association, and Cheshire County Golf Partnership Chair Ted Leather.
The Cheshire CGP has launched a wide range of initiatives under the banners of ‘Get into Golf’ and ‘Go4Green’.
As well as targeting junior players, special emphasis has been placed on the 16plus age group with free taster sessions and low-cost coaching sessions designed to appeal to beginners to the sport or those looking to return to golf.
Driving ranges and municipal golf courses have also supported the scheme, which has been tailored to have a wide appeal, including sessions for ladies only, couples and disability groups. Those taking part also received a free Wilson 7 iron golf club.
Says Melanie Flude: “Our success at these awards is down to the hard work of many people – ranging from those individuals who have volunteered to become involved in the county partnership, the PGA professionals who have delivered the projects, the clubs who have supported us and our county development officer Craig Thomas.
“Everyone who has supported the different schemes has shown a positive and proactive approach to ensuring that golf attracts a new generation of players for the future, which can only help safeguard the clubs in the years ahead.”
The England Golf Partnership (EGP) was established to co-ordinate one development plan for golf in England, known as 'The Whole Sport Plan', and attracted substantial funding from Sport England.
Its aim, through the implementation of its Whole Sport Plan, is to increase and widen the participation levels in golf and achieve a vision of being 'The Leading Golf Nation in the World by 2020' from grass roots right through to elite level.
A network of county golf partnerships was put in place across England to deliver a raft of schemes aimed at increasing participation in golf by people of all ages and abilities.
The EGP is a collaboration of a number of stakeholders in the sport including the English Golf Union, The English Women's Golf Association, the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.
In Cheshire, the County Golf Partnership is supported by the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs, the Cheshire Ladies' County Golf Association and the Cheshire PGA.

Cheshire v Cumbria - Appleby Golf Club
Cheshire win Daily Telegraph Northern League
Cheshire took on Cumbria at Appleby Golf Club in the final match of the Daily Telegraph Northern League. Unbeaten in their first four matches, Cheshire needed only a halved match to win the Northern League for the first time since 2004. A loss would require Yorkshire to beat nearest rivals, Lancashire, at Formby Golf Club.
Against a very strong Cumbria team, Cheshire struggled in the Foursome's series, losing by 4 games to 2. Matters got worse in the singles, with Cheshire losing the first four games. County Captain, David Peel steadied the boat somewhat winning his match at the same time as reports from Formby indicated Lancashire had lost the morning foursomes by a margin of 5 games to 1. Despite this encouraging news and a spirited fight back by the remaining players on the course, Cheshire eventually lost the match by 10 1/2 games to 7 1/2 games.
All now rested on events at Formby with news coming through as Cheshire lost the final game that Lancashire had also lost to Yorkshire ensuring that Cheshire were winners of the League.

Cheshire teams played a double header of fixtures against teams from Yorkshire. Cheshire Boys travelled to Shipley Golf Club and took on a typically strong Yorkshire team. Cheshire won the morning foursomes series by 4 games to 2 games and were strongly placed for the afternoon series of singles. Injury to Cheshire Boys' Captain Oliver Carr (Heswall Golf Club) meant a walkover to Yorkshire in the first game. With Cheshire losing the next two games, giving Yorkshire the advantage a spirited fight back resulted in the Cheshire Boys' winning five of the remaining nine games thus ensuring a halved match overall at 9 games each.
Meanwhile, at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, the Senior team played their Northern League match against Yorkshire Seniors. The morning Greensomes were shared, but a flurry of birdies in the afternoon from the Cheshire players resulted in a 5 games to 1 game margin to Cheshire and a overall victory of 8 games to 4 games.

EGU Northern Group Boys Qualifier - Wilmslow Golf Club
Cheshire finished a disappointing fourth behind Yorkshire, Lancashire and Durham. Each County is represented by 6 players who play 36 holes of medal golf. The best 5 gross scores in the morning and afternoon sessions count and the winner is the County with the lowest aggregate score for the 10 rounds. The morning session led to Lancashire leading with a combined score of -7 for their 5 best scores. Cheshire were lying third with a score of +2. Oliver Carr (Heswall GC) had the best Cheshire score of 67 (-5) with Ryan Jackson (Reddish Vale GC) the only other player under par (-2).
The afternoon brought a remarkable turn around with Yorkshire storming through to a narrow victory. Their combined afternoon score was -9 with all their counting scores being under par. Their overall total was -3 and Lancashire finished a close second at +2. Cheshire fell away in the afternoon with a combined score of +14. Oliver Carr again excelled with a 71 gross. Ryan Jackson also had an excellent Championship and finished at -1 for the 36 holes. Several other Cheshire players did not bring their best game to the event and we finished 16 over par for the combined total. The format is a difficult one for the players and it is a stiff learning curve. Several Cheshire players are available next year and this experience will prove invaluable for them.

The final stages of the 2011 Match Play Championship took place over the weekend at Ringway Golf Club.
Saturday saw the 3 rd & 4 th Rounds reducing the field to 4 players for the Sunday semi-finals. In the first 4 th round match, County Captain, David Peel (Stockport) met local favourite Henry Featherstone. Peel won the match 4 & 3. The second match saw current Boys Captain and England international Oliver Carr (Heswall) take on 2010 Boys Captain Mark Geddes. Geddes won 3 & 2.

Former winner Gareth Bradley (Bramhall) and Championship holder Ray Hughes (Caldy) have nearly 300 combined county appearances between them. In an epic encounter, Hughes eventually won at the 23 rd hole.
The first semi-final was between Peel and Geddes. Geddes took an early lead reaching 4 up after nine holes. However, the experienced Peel steadily clawed back the holes only to lose 1 down on the 18 th green. The second semi-final between Barker and Hughes was much closer with no player creating any sort of lead. Hughes won 1 up on the 18 th .
The final saw youth against experience with Hughes giving over 25 years to his younger opponent. Geddes once again was off to a quick start soon amassing a four hole lead. But unlike in the match against David Peel, Geddes steadily increased his lead and ran out a 6 & 5 winner.

Warren Golf Club Centenary
Warren Golf Club, one of the oldest clubs in England to play over a muncipal golf course, celebrated its centenary today. Amongst the invited guests were the Mayor and Mayoress of Wirral; President of the English Golf Union, Antony Abraham; President of the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs, Roger Fielding, various officials from Wirral Council and numerous past Captains. In presenting a Royal Crown Derby commerative plate to club Captain, Kevin McCormack, EGU President Anthony Abraham stated without clubs such as the Warren Golf Club providing an entry into the game for beginners, especially juniors, the game of golf would be very much poorer.
Golf has been played over the Warren since 1889 with the New Brighton Golf Society forming in 1890. The course was bought by Wallasey Borough Council in 1896. The Warren Golf Club was formed in 1911 and affiliated to the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs and the English Golf Union when those Associations founded in 1920 and 1924. In 1940, the R.A.F. commandeered the Grange building as a local HQ with local rules devised for combat rigs used to hold anti-aircraft balloons aloft. The course was closed from 1941 for use as a rocket site protecting Liverpool and surrounding district. Golf returned in 1947 following the removal of the weapons and repair of bomb craters!
Warren members have had success in Cheshire events; Mr Charles Mitchell & Mr W A Rickets won the 1963 Victory Trophy played at Bromborough and in 1964 Mr Ralph Hogg won the County Handicap Trophy at nearby Wallasey Golf Club. Though only boasting a small membership of 61 there is a full calendar of events throughout the year. With well appointed club rooms displaying trophies, past winners and some fine early photgraphs the club looks well set for another 100 years.
