Ashton-on-Mersey Golf Club are looking to celebrate the club’s 125th anniversary in style with a series of events throughout a busy season.

One of the first events was an Open Team competition which was been well subscribed with the players able to enjoy the course in immaculate condition backed by superb club hospitality.

Mersey Captain Paul Nuttall, who was an early starter, said: “To mark the event, for the afternoon starters we invited some of our most senior and long standing members to officiate and welcome players onto the tee.

“They were Roy Offland a member for 72 years, Cyril Hill our oldest current playing member and Helen Hill ex-club President and longest standing still current playing lady member who saw the afternoon the early afternoon players off.

“I was able to meet up with them for refreshments midway through our round and I was delighted to have my old friend and former Ashton member Neill Greenhalgh, the current Captain of Ringway GC on my team. “The top team won with a fantastic score of 93 points and  the well organised and attended event was superbly managed by our resident professional Kris Andrews. “There is plenty more to celebrate in the coming months at our wonderful club!”

Cyril Hill added: I first played at Ashton in the early 1960’s when I was on leave from India and I joined as a full member in 1974

“Among many memorable moments are raising the money to buy the course

And after the clubhouse fire Roy and I were both on the restoration committee, being secretary, captain and president then being made a life member.

“I have been a member of a few clubs in Scotland, England and India but none lived up to Ashton

“Helen joined Ashton a few years after me she has been lady secretary lady captain and she has run the past captains and represented Ashton in the Past Ladies Association and she was elected as the first lady to be President of the club.”
