Cheshire Boys under 14 team enjoyed a great day at Hill Valley Golf Club as they took on the under 16 team from Shropshire and Herefordshire.

The day went to a dramatic finale with the result depending on the final two games and ending at 7.5 apiece.

Cheshire official Graham McCormack said: “On the 18th we were staring defeat in the face in the last two matches.

“Murray Craig (Sandiway) was all square and putting in the penultimate match sank a 12-footer, whilst his opponent then missed from nine feet to halve the match, bringing a big  smile to Murray's face and a happy journey home with his mum.

“In the very last match and not wishing to be outdone, Jasper Hughes (Wilmslow) was, one down and playing the final hole, got to within three feet of the hole with his first putt, whilst his opponent was five feet short with his first putt. Putting first the S&H player only had to hole his putt to win the hole and the match for the hosts, but he lipped out!

“With all eyes on him, including about 75 hotel guests on the balcony, Jasper coolly sank his putt, not realising that the whole match hinged on it.

“Jasper and his dad, Andy, we last saw embracing each other as they skipped through the car park on the way to dad's car.

“Many thanks to Ollie Whitely, our County professional, for his words of encouragement and to my colleagues Jim McBride and Stuart Laing for their support of me and also  the players throughout a very long day against very strong opposition.
