The Mere Resort were again top class hosts for the 67th Annual Dinner of the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs.
Cheshire executive members, former Cheshire Presidents and officials, distinguished guests from other counties and associations, Cheshire club groups and team members enjoyed an excellent meal in a very sociable atmosphere well led by Cheshire secretary Peter Whitehead the MC for the occasion.
After Deputy President Andrew Henshall (Wilmslow GC) had said grace and Cheshire President Chris Moore (Royal Liverpool) had given the Loyal Toast and the meal had been enjoyed by all present the first main speech was given by Chris Hilton, the Captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews proposing a toast the CUGC. Chris gave an informative account of the work and definitions of the R&A with a particular emphasis on the new rules of golf coming in in 2019 plus some entertaining insights into his long life in golf.
Cheshire President Chris Moore responded with the toast to the guests and then praised the excellent work done by the Cheshire Executive in support of their member clubs in some difficult times for golf. The President summarised the highlights of a busy and successful season of county matches and competitions and awarded the Team Player of the Year award to Mike Harrington (Prestbury) and the Order of Merit to Steve Capper (Royal Liverpool).
The evening was concluded by Joe Pinnington (Royal Liverpool), the guest speaker with an entertaining account of his long time in golf with a variety of sporting experiences.
It was also announced that the new Deputy President for 2019 will be David Durling (Shrigley Hall).
