Last gasp putt by Lancashire secures 9 - 9 draw at Royal Birkdale

Cheshire v Lancashire draw at Royal Birkdale

Cameron Massey Jack Brooks

THE top players in Lancashire and Cheshire enjoyed a great stage at Royal Birkdale Golf Club as they played their latest round of the Daily Telegraph Northern Counties League.

Cheshire made a solid start as they led the morning foursomes by 4-2 with wins for Lewis George and Chris Chilton, Steve Capper and Cameron Massey, Rob Cull and Will Dodds and match-play champion Mike Harrington and Jack Brooks with Sean and Ciaran Doherty and Richie Blundell and Mark Hyde replying for Lancashire.

Lewis George extended the lead with the opening singles  win by one up against Lancashire champion Luke Kelly but then the contest turned on its head with three Lancashire wins for Jonathan Hurst, Sean Doherty and Ian Kenwright putting the Red Rose team on level terms.

After that it was nip and tuck with Cheshire wins for Cameron Massey, Will Dodds, James Newton and Mike Harrington giving them a one-point lead as Lancashire replied with wins for John Carroll, Richie Blundell and Joe Bannan.

It was now all eyes on the final game between Greg Holmes (Royal Birkdale) and Jack Brooks (Mere) as it went to the fantastic stage of the 18th green where a cool putt from Greg gave him victory and rescued a point to end a terrific contest locked at 9-9
