Now with several of them moving up to the higher age groups Manager Graham McCormack and his team are preparing the new squad members for 2027 beginning with an inaugural get-together at Astbury Golf Club and playing a competition. Graham reported: “I would like to give thanks to Astbury GC and their JO, Andy Harrison for hosting the day and also to parents, who support us and their children.. “On our side, thanks to Jim McBride and Mike Jones, along with our referee Tony Brook and our pro Mark Johnson for calling in on his day off! “Thanks also to Dom McAllister, our official photographer for the souvenir pictures. and to Henry, Harrison and Ollie for guesting on the day to make up our group numbers. “It all went very well , the weather was kind to us; the course was in superb condition and the new team spirit amongst all of the players was so nice to witness. “The Stableford competition went well but we are not unduly worried about results, it’s the very beginning of their adventure with the U14s and Stableford points scoring gives us an instant picture of where we are now and where we need to be in the times ahead. “We will try to organise another one before the playing season starts in April. “To the players -your programme is work in progress, which will take us into the New Year to complete. In the meantime keep practicing and await the details of your coaching dates, which will be relayed to you by Mike Jones.” Pics – Group one Casper Bernstein-Ringway, Leo Murphy-Sandiway,Henry Quinn-Disley, guest Group 2 Finley Glenn-Wallasey. The scope of the competition was wide, you could focus on players, the course, flora, fauna, clubhouse and pretty much anything related to your club. And that is what we got Our judging panel included the County President and two highly experienced and qualified photographers who happen to be Cheshire Golf Life Members. They were very impressed with the submissions and after much discussion came up with the first and second: The winner: from Phil Alley. Dawn at Pryors Hayes GC Runner-up: from James Turner of Runcorn GC You can view the other entries here Our thanks to everyone who submitted their images. We hope to run another competition in 2027 --- ## Fabulous day for Mixed Foursomes at Vale Royal **Published:** Monday, 12 October 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/fabulous-day-for-mixed-foursomes-at-vale-royal *McBurney and Morrison win in late show * Vale Royal Abbey GC were again top class hosts for the Cheshire Mixed Foursomes Championship providing a course given praise by all of the players for its pristine condition with plenty of challenges along the way. This was supported by wall-to-wall sunshine and excellent and friendly hospitality in their iconic clubhouse. Actually, it is an abbey! Teams were entered from across Cheshire with all of the pairs finding the back nine holes very testing. The early leaders were Mark Flannigan and Gillian Duncan (Vicars Cross) setting the early pace with 35 points. This was matched by Sue and Keith Robinson (Wallasey) but as so often happens in competitions the sting in the tail came from the last group out. The pairing of Emily McBurney (Royal Liverpool), a County star and a member of the Cheshire ladies team who won the English County Championship, and Andy Morrison (Vicars Cross) also carded 35 points (pictured above). It was then down to a cpo on the three pairs and it went down to the score on the last six holes to take Emily and Andy Into top spot from Gillian and Mark with Keith and Sue picking up the third place prize. They were presented with the prizes by Cheshire Deputy President Stewart Neil (Royal Liverpool), who had enjoyed playing in the competition with his wife Jane (Wirral GC) and their playing partners Michael and Sheila Copeland (Wallasey). There was a warm and friendly atmosphere in the clubhouse after the golf with many new friendships being made and deserving thanks being given to the County organisers and staff and members of VRA for providing a smooth and enjoyable golfing experience. The first match was the Business Ladies competition played at Bromborough GC between Alsager (East) and Pryors Hayes (West) on the day before the other three finals and a close contest was won 2-1 by Alsager. Next day the first match was between the A teams of Sale and Delamere Forest and first off the tee for Sale was Cheshire and England Seniors star Cath Rawthore and she set her team off well with a 4/2 win over Christine Lancaster. Sue Oldham doubled Sale’s lead with a 2/1 win over Chrissie Harding-Roberts. Then Delamere showed their fighting spirit with wins from Jan Pomfret 3/1 over Julie Matthews, Rhian Jones by 5/3 over Caroline Croxton and Claire Makin one up over Sue Barrett taking them in front. Chris Johnson drew Sale level with a tense one-up win over Carol Keeble and victory for Sale was sealed by Fiona Flanagan 3/2 over Lorrayne Gracie. Next up in the B team match were Macclesfield (East) against Portal (West ).in another exciting contest. Amy Lester gave Portal an early lead with a win on the 19th over Sue Collins but Alex Forbes drew Macc level with another thriller on the 19th over Tracy Akin. Then Macc struck hard with wins for Wendy Higgins 3’2 over Portal Lady Captain Sue Wall, Judy Mutter 5/3 over Joanne Barrett and Sue Orwin 8/6 against Joanne Ridgeley to clinch the title. Kate Sage pulled one back for Portal beating Gill Evans 4./3 and with victory assured Julia Dunne conceded her match to Anne-Marie Stott to see Macclesfield win the match 4-3. The final match of the day was for the Plate (C division) between Eaton (West) and Alsager was another thriller. Tanya Southern (Eaton) won on the 19th over Alison West then Angela Shenton one up over Anne Britton drew Alsager level and this was followed by another win on the 19th for Linda Goddard (Alsager) over Barbara Parker and Alsager clinched victory with wins for Cheryl Plant 3/2 over Lyn Bond and Pat Leese 2/1 over Elizabeth Caulfield with the other two matches being conceded to take Alsager to victory and East Cheshire to a 4-0 clean sweep. The trophies were presented to the winning teams by Heswall Lady Captain Susan Wright who congratulated all of the teams and supporters, Heswall Golf Club and the competition and team organisers in putting on a great day for ladies golf in perfect weather Pictured above, the victorious Sale team: Caroline Croxton, Julie Matthews, Cath Rawthord, Sue Barrett, Sue Oldham, Fiona Flanagan, Chris Johnson Copy & images: Geoff Garnett --- ## Two late-season wins for Super Seniors **Published:** Monday, 5 October 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/two-late-season-wins-for-super-seniors The Cheshire Super Senior men (over 65s) only play a few matches each year but had two in three days. They won both, which was more wins in September than a certain local Premier League team. Firstly the team met at a windy Wychwood Park to take on their counterparts from Shropshire & Herefordshire. The 11-1 result is perhaps a little flattering as five matches went to the 18th with Cheshire winning four of them. Next up, two day later, they played North Wales Counties for the annual renewal of the Phil Jones Trophy at North Wales GC. With two debutants, Chris Morfitt and Rob Thomas who both won. Team captain Neil Waite wondered whether the numerous large winning margins was something to do with the proximity of the 14th green to the clubhouse. --- ## County Plate success for Will and Tom **Published:** Sunday, 4 October 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/county-plate-success-for-will-and-tom *Cheshire players pick up our first ever County Plate at North of England Amateur Championship* Will Bebbington (Royal Liverpool GC) and Tom Johnson (The Wilmslow GC) won the County Plate playing in the North of England Amateur Championships at Seaton Carew - the first time Cheshire have ever won it! The first two rounds scores for the top two players for Lancashire,, Yorkshire, Cheshire (and a few other Northern counties) are taken and the county with the lowest score take home the County Plate. Will finished 9th overall and Tom was 12th overall with their total score winning them the trophy. It marks the end to an impressive season for Will who has won the Faldo Masters and Delamere Horn (April) and then after two months out with a fractured wrist has returned great results finishing as runner up in the Midland Youths, Keddleston Goose, Faldo Series Portal and he made the last 16 of the English's Amateur, fourth place in the Wem Bowl (Hawkstone Park) and then capped that all off with the County Plate and ninth place in the North of England Amateur. The competition was created following the unification of the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs and the Cheshire County Ladies Golf Association in September 2024, which resulted in the formation of Cheshire Golf Limited. To celebrate this significant moment in Cheshire golf, the new competition was established to bring ladies and gentlemen together in a mixed-team foursomes knockout format – a format that is completely new to Cheshire Golf. Each team consists of 10 players, with ladies and gentlemen competing together throughout the competition. Cheshire County President Marjorie Griffiths, who proposed the competition as a way of celebrating the successful unification, was present at Finals Day to present the inaugural Unity Trophy to the winning Macclesfield team. A huge thank you to event organiser Graham Sayers and Vice President Stewart Neil for his support on the day. Fourteen teams from across the county battled their way through the season, with Bramall Park, Chester, Macclesfield and Stamford earning their places at Finals Day at a pristine Chester Golf Club. The morning semi-finals produced two closely fought contests. Bramall Park came through against the home side Chester, securing a 3 - 2 victory to book their place in the afternoon final. Macclesfield also recorded a 3 - 2 win, overcoming Stamford in another closely contested semi-final and setting up a final against Bramall Park. The afternoon final proved to be another competitive encounter, but it was Macclesfield Golf Club who held their nerve to claim a second successive 3 - 2 victory and become the first names on the Unity Trophy. It was a fitting conclusion to the inaugural competition, which brought clubs from across Cheshire together to celebrate the creation of Cheshire Golf Limited and the unification of men's and women's golf within the county. Congratulations to Macclesfield Golf Club, the inaugural Unity Trophy Mixed Foursomes champions. MDGA President Ian Brooks praised and welcomed both teams for being winners in reaching this stage. Dunham Forest set up a terrific stage for the final both on and off the course for both teams and their supporters to enjoy with good weather to back it. Wychwood got off to a flier winning the first three matches through James Voce, 5/3, Gary Pickford two up and Geoff Marchant 4/3. before Colin McWiggan3/2and  Nicky Platt 5/3 gave hope for Dukinfield.  But the win was secured by Wychwood pro Tom Metcalfe over Dave Green by 5/3 to the delight of his team and supporters. The other match was declared all-square between Martyn Schofield (Dukinfield) and James Picariello (Wychwood) to see Wychwood home by 4.5-2.5. The trophy and prizes were presented on the delightful outside terrace at Dunham with thanks given to all by Ian Brooks and the Captains of Dunham Forest, Dukinfield and Wychwood for a great day of top golf. --- ## Inaugural mixed-gender match with Lancashire a real success **Published:** Tuesday, 29 September 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/mixed-gender-match-with-lancashire *Cheshire and Lancashire, both "unified" counties, launched an annual junior mixed-gender match at Hurlston Hall GC* Sunday 27th September 2026 saw the first ever mixed gender match between Cheshire and Lancashire. Lancashire were very kind hosts for this inaugral fixture and even organised the weather. Six boys and six girls from each county set off playing mixed foursomes in the morning and singles matches in the afternoon. Sadly the handicaps of Cheshire’s foursomes pairings were not as strong as the Lancashire ones as their girls had some extremely low handicaps, but everyone gave it a good go and whilst James Clark and Yasmine Chambers managed a half in their match it wasn’t until the final green when Jack Walker and Isobella Donnelly managed to get a full point for Cheshire. The afternoon singles started with a fine win for Josh Hockenhull followed by wins for Shane Clayton and halves for Missy Green and Harvey Taylor, who eagled the last hole to bring his match back to all square. The win of the day award goes to Isobella Donnelly who was only asked to play on Saturday due to a late withdrawal due to flu of another girl. Isobella completed her successful morning with a fine win on the 15th green. But by then, Lancashire had enough points and the final match ended with Jack Walker securing a half to see the final score 11:7 to the hosts. Lancashire did a wonderful job of the presentation after hesitation as to whether to do it inside or outside, but with so many parents there to see the first ever presentation of the Ruth Whitehead/Les Wilson Salver they sensibly opted to do it in the sunshine outside. Les made a great speech and kept it very short, and next year we are hoping to have both Ruth and Les there and hopefully Cheshire can use home advantage to help them win in 2027. A total of 48 ladies took part in the competition at Bromborough Golf Club, playing an 18-hole three ball betterball. The best two scores from each team counted towards the final result. Taking the title were Tracy McGregor, Gilly O’Neil and Tina Moorhouse, who finished in first place with a score of 78 points. Second place went to Jacqui Bickerton, Gillian Singh and Liz Thomas with 72 points, while Caroline Harrison-Croft, Nicky Markland and Michelle Pretty completed the Prestbury clean sweep in third place on 71 points. The competition was played in good conditions, with the rain threatening throughout the day but thankfully staying away. There was also plenty of praise for the Bromborough greenkeeping team, who have done an amazing job restoring the course following the hot, dry weather. The course had been transformed from what was described as a sunburned desert back to the lush green fairways that Bromborough members have come to expect. Clubhouse catering was also to the high standard that members and visitors have come to expect. The Cheshire Golf organisers also deserve great credit for running the event flawlessly. Sue Hughes and Lesley Brett managed the arrivals and scoring with Sarah starter on the first tee, while on-course referees and marshals Andrew Parker and Mark Roberts from High Legh kept everything running smoothly on the course throughout the day. Although 4 matches went to the final green three of these ended all square and the last, which was an epic father v son match, ended with a victory by just one hole to Andy Hughes, and probably saved his son Jasper from having to ring up his mum for a lift home. The fixture was played in beautiful sunshine on a fantastic course, with the greens still in magnificent condition following the Club’s Autum Meeting held the previous day. All the players were extremely complimentary about the course. What was even nicer to hear was how complimentary the home team were about the standard and performance of the youngsters they were playing against. But in the end experience paid off and the home team secured a 6.5:1.5 victory with every one of the home team contributing to the final score. Hopefully a great experience for all the boys and as one of the parents commented afterwards, “my son’s opponent was very, very good to play with, and gave some great feedback that he thinks will be really useful” Many thanks to all the Wilmslow players for a fine match. --- ## Bromborough win Taylor Made Team Championship **Published:** Tuesday, 15 September 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/bromborough-win-taylor-made-team-championship The Cheshire Team Championship supported by TaylorMade was held at Ringway Golf Club. Foursomes has a long and fascinating history in Cheshire golf. A century ago, it was really the only pairs format played, and in 1923, County President R.H. Prestwich generously donated the magnificent trophy that is still played for today. The 1923 competition was played as a matchplay event, with the Stockport pairing of Sid Potter and Israel Sidebottom claiming the title. The tournament format changed during the 1990s, becoming a 36-hole, one-day event, reflecting the changing formats and development of competitive golf. This year’s championship produced an outstanding performance from Mike Holtom of Hazel Grove and Alex Wigley of Stockport taking the title with an impressive gross score of 69+68=137. The pair also secured the Victory Trophy for the nett competition, finishing with a superb score of 131 – an outstanding double victory. Runners-up in both the Gross and Nett competitions were James Clark of Sandiway and Josh Hockenhull of Prestbury, who enjoyed an excellent championship. Third place went to Lewis Meston and Nat Bamford of Bramhall Park, while Matt Bonner and James Parkes, both from Hazel Grove, finished fourth. Following the competition, Cheshire President Marjorie Griffiths gave an enlightening speech, outlining the history and story behind this prestigious event before presenting the winners with their trophies and prizes. A special thank you was also given to Jerry Dixon, along with starter Kevin McCormack, referees Alan Adams and Mike Clarke for their valuable contribution to the smooth running of the championship. Congratulations to Mike and Alex on a fantastic performance and a memorable Foursomes Championship victory. There were three Cheshire players in the mix with Morgan Bollan (Crewe GC) and Will Furness (Ringway GC) playing for Wales (qualifying by having Welsh mothers) and making a vital contribution by winning all of their matches. Austin O’Connor was unlucky to lose to a birdie on the last, but Tom McCann finished his opponent off on the short downhill 16th to win 4&2.  This left the match still tied at 4.5:4.5. The next match saw Jasper Hughes lose and this was followed by Max Gilsenan getting a win on the 18thto tie his match, and then the reigning Under 16s and Under 18s Boys Championship winner Shane Clayton finished his match on the 18th winning 1 up and leaving the match tied again at 6:6  Austin Eastwood then finished his match with a win on the last green and Jeremy Ju won 2&1 to put things back in the home side’s favour. However, defeats for George Bull and Aidan Lam meant it was down to young Harvey Eastwood, and James Priest to decide this engrossing contest which was then tied at 8:8.  James went down the 18th and won 1 up, whilst Harvey was so unlucky to see his opponent end his chance of a half with a finally taken putt for a birdie, which was cheered on by all the Lancashire Boys and their officials and parents. One couldn’t help but feel sorry for young Harvey in his first match but he played really well and is definitely one for the future following on from his brother Austin who is going to progress into the Under 18s squad next year with a few of the other boys playing today.  However, as coach Peter Barber put it at the finish the whole team should be very proud of their performances and with 7 of the 12 singles matches going to the 18th green, a final result of 9:9 was a fair outcome. Team Manager Andrew Henshall thanked all the boys and their parents many of whom came to support and without whose help the boys would never get to all the events and matches they play in. Report by Andrew Henshall Results --- ## Boys title bid foiled by Yorkshire **Published:** Friday, 28 August 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/boys-title-bid-foiled-by-yorkshire Our Boys team took their hopes of winning the Northern League title again going into their final match of the season against Yorkshire Boys at Wheatley Golf Club.Yorkshire won the league title in 2025 and also won the Boys "Little 6" last month to qualify for the English Boys County Finals. The morning foursomes saw Yorkshire take a big 4-1 lead with the only Cheshire win coming from Dean Lenahan and Harvey Taylor. Cheshire Boys Captain Matty Griffiths (Lymm) signed off with a big 6&4 win before jetting of to the USA the following day to begin his golf scholarship. Cheshire’s other points came from Will Furness and Austin Eastwood plus a half from Jack Barnes. Sadly a 10.5-4.5 defeat meant that Yorkshire retain the Boys Northern Counties League. But Cheshire remain very optimistic that the outstanding young talent coming through the ranks will see them looking forward to success again in the near future. --- ## Super Seniors lose to Cumbria **Published:** Thursday, 27 August 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/super-seniors-lose-to-cumbria A report from team Captain Neil Waite: We played our 2nd match of the season at a green and rather lush and slightly damp Grange of Sands GC against Cumbria. It was slightly surreal to not be getting 100+ yards of run. Grange over Sands GC was designed by Alister Mackenzie in 1919 and made for an interesting challenge with numerous doglegs and some very small greens. After an opening win against Lancashire I am sad to report that Cumbria won the match by 3 games to 2. To use cricketing parlance, the tail "wagged" after a top order collapse. --- ## Shane canters to 8 shot win in Boys Chamionship **Published:** Thursday, 20 August 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/shane-canters-to-8-shot-win-in-boys-chamionship Delamere Forest Golf Club has hosted the Cheshire Boys Championships since 1984 and once more they provided a magnificent stage for a superb contest. The quality of the golfing talent on view was amazing and reflected the hard work put in by Cheshire Golf in developing junior golf. The boys showed their golfing talent and also their friendship and impeccable golfing etiquette throughout the enthralling 36 holes. Setting the pace was Shane Clayton of Delamere Forest, who had won the Cheshire Boys u16 title at Pryors Hayes GC a couple of weeks ago. He posted a magnificent gross 66 to have a big lead going into the second round. He kept up his momentum in round two with another great score of 67 for a winning total of 133 which left him eight shots clear of Cheshire team stars Dean Lenahan (Wilmslow GC) and Will Furness (Ringway GC). Shane (15) became only the second player to win both the Cheshire Under-16s and Boys Championship titles in the same year, the other being another Delamere member Lewis George in 2013. Other prize winners were Best Net round two Ben Maton 70, Best Gross round two Bobby Moore, Best Net 36 holes Eamonn Palmer (Upton by Chester) 139. Shane, who began the day with a 0.0 handicap and finished it on +2.0, will now go to represent Cheshire in the English Boys County Champion of Champions Tournament at Woodhall Spa GC in September. Cheshire have never had a winner of this event. Yet! Cheshire Golf President Marjorie Griffiths (RIngway GC) opened the presentation to the winners with deserved thanks to Delamere Forest staff and members for again being magnificent hosts for the championships, the players and their parents and supporters for their outstanding qualities on a great day for Cheshire Golf . Her praise for all involved was echoed by Delamere Forest Captain Mark Proctor who was delighted that his club were such great hosts. It really started to go wrong when we looked like taking a four point lead in the foursomes against Yorkshire then lost the match from a very strong position in the singles. Further league losses and fifth place finish in the Big 6 left us looking for some encouragement as we head into the close of the season. A trip to the delightful Ormskirk Golf Club is always enjoyable however, just as long as you don't trust sat nav which will try to take you down a track best suited to only the larger models of tractor. This league match with Lancashire really was the proverbial "dead rubber" with both sides having no prospect of topping the table. The spectator count (only two hands needed), with a sparse number of die-hard followers, reflected the uninspiring status of the match We introduced some new faces, Nathan Hopley, shortly to return to college in north Tennessee, and Alex Williams (Wallasey), and also welcomed back Chris Chilton who, despite being seriously "under cooked" having played only seven rounds this year, secured some valuable points. Ormskirk, set in attractive heathland, was very burnt up like most courses. But with excellent and very receptive greens, the scene was set for some low-scoring matches In the morning foursomes Matt Dodd-Berry and Sam Johnson were dormie two up against host club member Andrew Haswell and English champion Jamie van Wyk, lost the 17th to a birdie and after a hooked drive on the 18th found the only patch of rough that hadn't been burnt off and had to settle for a half. Such outcomes feel almost inevitable during the sort of run the men have endured this term. We lost the next four matches but Chris Chilton and Matt Birch stopped the rot with a win. So we went into what was a particularly good lunch with another deficit that would be very difficult to overcome against a strong team with more than sprinkling of local knowledge. Bizarrely, Lancashire had two home league matches this year and both were played here at Ormskirk. Has this ever happened before in the Northern Counties League? Our start to the singles gave reason for optimism. In the top match, Matt Dodd-Berry won a hard-fought victory over Andrew Haswell by the smallest margin. In the second match Sam Johnson was six under par in claiming the scalp of newly-crowned English Amateur Champion Jamie van Wyke. A win to remember. Hard-fought wins for Joe Sephton, Nathan Hopley, Chris Chilton and Alex Williams, plus a half for Josh Sims resulted in Cheshire claiming a 6.5 to 5.5 singles win, a strong performance and one to build on for the future. The final score was a 10-8 win for the hosts. Our final league match is at Tytherington on Saturday 5th September where we welcome Cumbria Copy & images: Jerry Dixon View full image gallery --- ## Hartford father and daughter win Wheatseaf Trophy **Published:** Monday, 17 August 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/hartford-father-and-daughter-win-wheatseaf-trophy Vicars Cross GC were excellent hosts for the Cheshire Girls Wheatsheaf Trophy competition. It features some top Cheshire girls partnered by their chosen partner- relative, friend or Cheshire organiser in a Greensome Stableford. The main organiser for the competition was Cheshire Girls Official Cathy Day who was first on the tee partnering Cheshire Girls Captain Naomi Willans (Astbury GC). Cathy said: “I'd like to thank Vicars Cross Golf Club for their warm welcome and all county officials, parents and players for making the event so enjoyable and successful.,” Joining them on the first tee were Summer Taylor-Potts (Marton Meadows GC) and Isla-May Handley (Congleton GC) who set a good benchmark of 41 points This was matched by Emilia Gravett (Styal) and Ellie Cunningham who lost out on a cpo. The Hartford father and daughter Team of Paul and Jessica Corbishley then took control with a fantastic 47. Cheshire Girls Champions Jess Flynn (Bramhall) and Cruz Norton (Northenden) with a great haul of 45 posed a late challenge but it was not enough to overtake Hartford’s Dynamic Duo. The trophies and prizes were presented by Cheshire Girls Captain Naomi Willans to complete an excellent competition at a superb Cheshire venue.. For the first time it included a grandfather in Tony Smith (Stamford GC) who partnered his grand-daughter Olivia to a respectable 36. They provided a challenging course and good support for all of the players and county officials on and off the course. There was some excellent golf on the course admired by host club Lady Captain Linda Heaher who complimented the players on their talent and quality of play. The players also brought great credit to Cheshire, their clubs and parents for the immaculate way they conducted themselves on and off the course and showing great respect for the host club, county officials and fellow players- with great friendship throughout a long day. The top prizes were for the leading Under16 and Under 14 gross scores and the best net score. The early pace was set by James Gilsenan (Chorlton GC), who had won his club’s Championship a few days previously as he posted a gross 73. Some of the lowest handicappers were in the later starters and James’ lead score was overtaken by Tom McCann (Hazel Grove) 72 and Jack Barnes (Romiley) 71, But the sting in the tail in the last group with Shane Clayton (Delamere Forest) posting a superb 68 to take the U16 trophy. In the U14 section the winner with 77 was Aidan Lam (Prestbury), one less than Ricky Mohun (Delamere Forest). The final prize for the best net score was won by Oscar Smith (Stamford) who celebrated his ninth birthday the day before the final. Oscar was probably the smallest as well the youngest player ever to win this section with an excellent net score of 67. The prizes were presented by Linda Heaher who also received a County Plaque from Cheshire Boys manager Andrew Henshall (pic above). Linda gave well deserved thanks to everyone who made this another special day for junior golf in Cheshire. It’s a frightening thought that one in three adults will suffer some form of brain injury, haemorrhages, tumours, strokes, accidents etc. Jean said: “We chose this Charity because our Captain’s daughter, Sophie, suffered a sub arachnoid brain haemorrhage in her early 30’s and she found this Charity very helpful in her recovery and Sophie is now a member of the Golf Club. “Relatively new club member Helen Wright was very keen to do something for the Charity as her first husband died from a sub arachnoid brain haemorrhage in his 30’s leaving her with two young boys and eight weeks pregnant with their third. “Although her husband did not survive she nevertheless feels very passionately about a Charity which helps survivors. Helen is 68 years old and she decided to do 68 holes in a day with the sponsors’ money going towards our charity. “She started at 5.30 am and finished about 8.30 pm, after playing 68 holes to match her age! “Helen was delighted to raise £3,500 on the day which will add to the other charity efforts we will be holding throughout the year.” Pics Helen with Jean halfway through her challenge Copy and image: Geoff Garnett --- ## Brightwell heads to Euopean Junior Finals **Published:** Sunday, 16 August 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/brightwell-heads-to-euopean-junior-finals *Astbury junior qualifies for major championship in Spain* Astbury Golf Club's Bobby Brightwell is hoping to follow in the footsteps of former finalists Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Nick Dougherty after taking the first step on the pathway to junior golf success. With an entry list that resembles the United Nations, this renewal of the Boys Championship was packed with quality players. 36 holes of strokeplay qualifying precedes the marathon matchplay stages and Cole turned in two excellent rounds of 68 and 66 (-8) to lead the qualifying. Dean Lenahan (Wilmslow) also qualified on level par. Cole won his opening match 3&2 against a German competitor before despatching a Spanish boy 6&4. Another German fell 4&3 to Cole in the round of 16 where he had no less than seven birdies.Dean Lenahan went out in the first matchplay round but can be very proud of this effort considering it is his first experience at this level of competition. The quarter finals saw Cole as the only British contender still standing. He faced Ludwig Libera of Sweden and a very close battle ensued. The match went to the 18th where Cole was edged out by the smallest margin. Libera went on to reach the final where he lost on the 37th. This was a superb performance from our Cheshire players in a field packed with top quality players from around the globe. They are the Balfour Cup, The Houldsworth Cup, the GS Lancashire Trophy and the Seniors Balfour Cup. The B and H was set up in 1897 by prominent politicians, entrepreneurs and golfers in the Stockport area-the Hon AJ Balfour and Sir William Henry Houldsworth in 1897 to encourage and promote amateur golf in the area. Originally the competitions were just for the Balfour and Houldsworth Cups for male players and the GS Lancashire was added in 1921 for mixed pairs and the Senior Cup in 2005. The B and H committee has no home base and relies on clubs to host the competitions each year and are always looking for clubs to host their top class competitions each year. This year the hosts for the GS Lancashire Cup were Chorlton Golf Club who were delighted to host the event and provided a terrific course and superb clubhouse facilities and catering. The competition sees the scores from the top lady and top man on each hole aggregated to provide the Stableford results. After a tough battle Cheshire won to set up a title decider with Yorkshire next week* Cheshire Boys manager Andrew Henshall reported: “Stamford Golf Club, situated on the Cheshire / Lancashire border in a very scenic location, could not have been more welcoming, what a great club to hold a match-play event on. Cheshire Boys and their helpers arrived in glorious sunshine with views in every direction and although their clubhouse does not usually open on a Monday, they were there to greet both teams with bacon baps. “Their Club Captain Clive Pimlott (pictured) came to do the starting, though he sadly had to rush off and missed some outstanding golf from the 20 young men out on the course. “The foursomes started badly for the home county and at one point Cheshire were behind in all five matches, but there were some great fightbacks, with Captain Matty Griffiths and Joseph Dodd-Berry scrapping hard for a half on the last green, “Ellis Courtnell and Wilf Simcock as well as James Clark and Josh Hockenhull both won 2/1then Jack Barnes and Callum Woolley came in with a win by 3/2 to give Cheshire a comfortable 3.5:1.5 lead at lunchtime. “With help from Peter Barber as our coach the boys set off again in the afternoon but once again as their matches passed the halfway stage it was not looking good for Cheshire. “However, having lost the first two matches, Joseph produced a wonderful finish on the 18th to put Cheshire marginally ahead. “Things then went bleak with only Josh winning from the next four matches to finish leaving Cheshire trailing by 6.5-5.5. “However, the last three matches featuring Jack Barnes, Callum Woolley and Lawson Yates all went Cheshire’s way giving them victory by 8.5-6.5.and keep them in the hunt to retain their Northern League title “Thanks go to the parents who enable the boys to get to these matches and all those including our President Marjorie Griffiths who came to support, also to Mark Smith the Stamford Club Professional who helped in so many ways on the day. “ Cheshire now have the opportunity to be Northern Counties Boys League Champions for only the second time if we can beat Yorkshire over at Wheatley Golf Club on Monday 17th August.” “A great win against wonderful opponents and friends from Lancashire Golf who are back to being a hard team to beat after a couple of fallow years.” Copy & images Geoff Garnett --- ## Girls County Jamboree 2026 **Published:** Sunday, 9 August 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/girls-county-jamboree-2026 A few days ago the 6 girls of the Cheshire Girls Junior Jamboree team battled hard over 2 days at Scarcroft GC in the Northern Junior Girls Jamboree. The first day was a singles Stableford competition, with all 6 scores being added together to give a total team score. The first day was very windy with showers. Add in a very bouncy course and it proved really tough with most competitors finding it hard to score. Top performers for Cheshire on the first day were Jamboree Team Captain Isobel Smith with 39 points and Olivia Smith with 35 points. The second day was foursomes matchplay, a new trial format for 2026 instead of the usual singles matchplay. It proved to be a great format for Team Cheshire with Captain Smith and partner Keira Saunders bringing in a superb 7&5 win. That was backed up by another fantastic performance by Oliva Smith and Isla May Handley who earned a hard fought draw after a ding dong battle against a fierce Lancashire pairing. Cheshires final pairing of Emma Barnes and Ewana Praveen again turned in a great performance, battling back from 5 down to lose only 3&2 on the 16th hole to a tough Northumberland pair. Whilst our Cheshire team gave their best over the 2 days, it was Cumbria who took the trophy, much to the tears and delight of their Junior Girls Manager. Huge thanks go to our players who behaved impeccably on and off the course and our county officials, Julia Wilkinson, Marjorie Griffiths, Den Burchell and Christina Hornsby without whom this trip wouldn't happen. Cheshire boys manager Andrew Henshall reported:“ Given how many players were missing from the team (A total of 25 from across those still eligible to play for the Under 16s). Cheshire still managed to field a very strong team. “But unfortunately their opponents from Yorkshire were both better on paper and on the course where it really mattered. “There were debuts at this level for several players and whilst Jack Barnes and Jayden Tommy won convincingly in the morning our only other success was Henry and William Quinn who were playing together for the first time as a Foursomes partnership. “Trailing 4:2 at lunch Cheshire won two of the first three singles matches with Max Gilsenan finishing two up and Pierce Freeman winning 5&4. “But alas after that great start to the afternoon our only other success was Luke Doran who won 3&2. “The final result was 13-5 to Yorkshire which they thoroughly deserved. “But a lot of our team who played this year will be young enough to play in this fixture over the next two years and hopefully the experience will inspire them to a better result next time we play against Yorkshire at Under 16 level.” Image above: Luke Doran Copy & images: Geoff Garnett --- ## Home win for Stockport pair **Published:** Friday, 7 August 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/home-win-for-stockport-pair *Beverley Bradbury and Aileen Martin win Margaret Salver at Stockport* Stockport Golf Club were proud and excellent hosts for the annual Cheshire Ladies competition for the Margaret Sangster Salver. We defeated Yorkshire 6-3 in the final to clinch the title Cheshire team: Denise Burchell (Sandiway - non-playing Captain)Lucy Jamieson (Heswall)Morgan Bollan (Crewe)Imogen Williamson (Delamere Forest)Amy Anson (Sandiway)Emily McBurney (Royal Liverpool)Sophie Clafton (Wallasey)Lauren Jones (Mellor)Becky McGeehan (Chester)Clara Leathers (Wallasey) Cheshire qualified for the England Women’s County Finals when finishing second to Yorkshire in the Northern County Match Week. Hosted by Betchworth Park Golf Club close to Box Hill in Surrey, the eight finalists faced a course that was fast and bouncy due to the sustained drought. The welcome return of Lucy Jamieson after a long injury lay-off, and Morgan Bollan who has done so well representing Wales recently, provided Cheshire Captain Den Burchell with a strong line up that would be essential over four days of fierce competition. The finalists were split into two groups of four for a round-robin series of matches comprising three foursomes matches and six singles each day. The winner of each group would meet in the final to decide the championship. We opened up with a match against Lincolnshire and this proved to be a really tough battle. Having taken two and half of the three foursomes points available, we then proceeded to lose the first three singles matches. Lauren Jones and Morgan Bollan came to the rescue and we were happy to get out with a drawn match. The second day saw us take on Dorset and this proved to be a comfortable win. 7-2 was the final score The third day proved to be a real nail-biter with qualification for the final on the line. Despite having lost their first two matches, Kent proved to be tough opposition and we found ourselves 2-1 down at lunchtime. Things didn’t look much better in the afternoon singles. The afternoon singles began with Cheshire needing at least one match point from a drawn contest, and with matches finely balanced across the course it would be a brave person to predict the outcome. First blood went to Cheshire thanks to victories from County Champion Morgan Bollan and Mellor’s Lauren Jones, putting the pressure firmly back on Kent. Kent responded with a point of their own, leaving everything resting on the final four matches. But in one of those we were dormie four down. That player was Heswall’s 2025 English Amateur Champion, Lucy Jamieson. But Lucy mounted an incredible comeback, reeling off birdies and eagles over the closing holes to keep her match alive, while Wallasey’s Sophie Clafton battled superbly in a tense, nip-and-tuck encounter. Sophie secured a priceless half point against a strong Kent opponent, but with scores filtering through it looked as though Cheshire had agonisingly fallen just short of Friday’s final. Lucy had other ideas. Spectators suddenly turned to see Lucy standing in the 18th fairway – her match was still alive. A superb approach shot produced a birdie to secure another vital half point for Cheshire. Suddenly, just one more win from the final match would be enough to clinch a place in the final. Step forward Becky McGeehan from Chester Golf Club. The calm and composed Becky had quietly and superbly played her way into a two-hole lead standing on the 17th fairway, before sealing victory just as the Cheshire posse came racing back across the course to cheer her home. Cheshire would meet old foes Yorkshire in the final. The morning foursomes were going Yorkshire’s way and they secured wins in the first two matches. At two-nil down we desperately needed a point from the third match and the ultra-reliable pair of Emily McBurney and Lauren Jones provided it with a gutsy win on the home hole. It’s unclear what was said at lunch but it worked. We soon found ourselves up in five of the six singles matches. Lauren Jones and Amy Anson were the first to secure comfortable wins and Lucy Jamieson then closed out a 1-up win on 18 having fought off a late surge from her opponent. Katie Stephens, who won five from five during the week, added Yorkshire’s solitary singles point to make it 4–3, but Sophie Clafton’s 4&2 win on the 16th clinched the title. Morgan Bollan was still out on the course, battling for a sudden death win. She put a cherry on the cake with a chip-in to win. Cue massive celebrations for the Cheshire players and supporters. This was our first win in the county finals for thirty years and our fourth win in total since the championship began in 1953. “It means everything to us as it’s 30 years since we’ve won it,” said Cheshire President Marjorie Griffiths. “We probably had a better performance in the final against our great rivals Yorkshire than we did in the other rounds. We clawed our way to the final, but we played some very good teams. We were meant to do this. “We are newbies really as we’re part of Cheshire Golf now we’ve unified with our men, and they’re going to be thrilled to bits. “We’ve had a lot more investment in terms of playing and training, and we’ve justified that.” This win followed success for Cheshire’s Boys last year in their county final and a very near miss in the Senior Men’s finals. This is without doubt our best run of success at national level in the 119 year history of county golf in Cheshire. Long may it last! Huge congratulations to Denise Burchell and her team, coaches and all of the supporters. A win that will live long in the memory England Golf report Results --- ## Wychwood win for Boys boosts title bid **Published:** Friday, 31 July 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/wychwoodboyswin The Northern Counties League match between Northumberland and Cheshire Boys was played at at Wychwood Park. Cheshire Boys team manager Andrew Henshall reported: “Our hosts at Wychwood were magnificent and the course was in excellent condition with a lot of run on some very dry fairways but the greens were well tended and provided perfect surfaces. “The course is well laid out in acres of land and with water on many holes to catch an errant shot an ideal location for a match-play event. “The morning started well with wins in the foursomes for Jack Barnes and Jack Tennant (5&4), Ben Davies and Will Furness (1up), Callum Woolley (3&2) and Lennon Smith & Jasper Hughes (2&1). “But the afternoon saw Northumberland come roaring back winning three and drawing two of the first six matches, with only Captain Matty Griffiths coming out ahead (7&6) in these matches. “However, wins by Lennon Smith (4&3), Jack Tennant (4&3) and Ben Davies (5&3) gave us an afternoon score of 5:5 and an overall victory of 9:6. “Thanks to John Heggarty who was superb in his encouragement both on the practice round on the Sunday and throughout the matches on the Monday. “I am now looking forward to the remaining two matches against Lancashire and Yorkshire with much more confidence after overcoming a very good Northumberland side. “These matches take place on Monday 10th August at Stamford when supporters of the Boys team will be most welcome, and at Wheatley near Doncaster on Monday 17th August.” Match results Copy: Geoff Garnett Images: Dominic McAllister --- ## Impressive Prestbury host memorable Girls Championship **Published:** Sunday, 26 July 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/impressive-prestbury-host-memorable-girls-championship Prestbury Golf Club were proud hosts for the prestigious English Girls Open Amateur Championship which was played over three days with an international field of 140 players. Cheshire played old rivals Lancashire at Northenden on 14th July. Both sides had difficulty fielding a full team due to injuries, holidays and attendance at the Open Championship. For Cheshire, Nick Ryan (Ringway) very kindly came to the rescue to ensure a full team of 12. Peter Darlington, (S&A) arose from his sick bed following a hip replacement and played for the Red Rose team. Well done to all. The Red Rose team took an early lead winning the top two games before the tail came good enabling a Cheshire win by four matches to two. (see result sheet attached) The Northenden course was in great shape having recovered from being completely flooded over New Year 2025. The catering staff looked after us well and chicken in peppercorn sauce was much appreciated after the game. Their Mackenzie course always provides a stiff challenge which was enjoyed by several of the ladies playing the course for the first time with the greens asking plenty of questions. They certainly provided a tough test for Cheshire President Marjorie Griffiths and her Ringway team mates Win Heath and Judith Wainwright The competition saw the two best score posted by the team on each hole to decide the result. Setting the early pace were the Sandiway team of Sue Morrant, Dianne Stow and Debra Riley with 71 points. The experienced Chorlton team of Pam Draper, Anne Moizer and Sarah Miles eventually edged the lead by a point but as always there is a sting in the tail as a ‘newby’ Chester GC team of Janice Atlay, Mao Chen and Samantha Argyle took top spot with a fine haul of 75. The competition was impeccably organised by Fiona Walton with good support from the Hazel Grove staff and members to make this a very pleasant day for all of the teams who gave universal support for the quality of the Grove course. You would perhaps not expect to find a golf club as you travel down the narrow Fogg Lane, but there is not only an excellent 18 hole course awaiting but also a driving range and a comfortable clubhouse! A veritable oasis. The fourth Cheshire Golf Life Member outing of the year took us to Antrobus in it's beautiful rural setting on a glorious warm and sunny day. The welcome we received was equally warm and the homely atmosphere of the club was evident to all "Lifers" as they tucked in to the obligatory bacon butty on arrival. A lone heron was spotted on the edge of the lake on the 18th patiently awaiting it's own breakfast as the sun came up. The Antrobus course, designed by the late Mike Slater, has numerous water hazards and requires careful course management especially in the hard and bouncy conditions we encountered. The excellent greens are generally quite small and therefore require precise approach shots to find the putting surfaces. The opportunity to add a new venue to a Lifer's list of courses played in the county is a real feature of membership, and many of the 156 'Lifers' who played had not previously visited Antrobus. Their feedback on the course was entirely positive and a number were asking why they'd not played here before. Alsager players always take the early start times and they do get a move on. The first few group were back in the clubhouse at 11.45. It was evident that the firm conditions would make local knowledge an even greater factor than usual, so it was not a huge surprise when players from the host club appeared at the head of the leader board. The eventual winners were David Buckley and, making his Lifers debut, Ian Bruce. In second place were Antrobus pair Alan Tyler and Keith Jackman on 42 points Nearest-the-pin was on the 'signature' 8th hole, a short par 3 which features a large pond between tee and green. Marc Williams got it in to about ten feet to win the prize. A significant number of balls were apparently swallowed up by the pond! Our thanks to club secretary Jill Cordingley for her excellent organisation and all of the staff at Antrobus who made the Lifers extremely welcome on what was a hugely enjoyable day. We returned to where it all began in 1921, the magnificent Delamere Forest GC who are tremendous supporters of county golf and were hosting their 12th men's championship. There is always something special about a championship at Delamere and a full field is guaranteed. But as anticipation of the event rose, so did the mercury. With a national heat warning in place we were promised 32 degrees C for the opening day. And we got it. In sweltering conditions the field of 105 players battled it out on a course presented beautifully by Course Manager Andy Williamson and his team. The rain of 3 weeks ago had resulted in some very thick rough in places to add to the challenge. Leader after round one was Sam Burton with an excellent 69, followed closely by Max Ranson (70). Day two dawned with a promise of even higher temperatures from the meteorologists. They weren't wrong and it proved to be a blisteringly hot day that was very uncomfortable for all. With players coming off the course resembling the cast of Flight of the Phoenix, the committee had to consider how advisable it was to expect players to undertake 36 holes on the final day and for volunteers and referees to be out in such heat for up to ten hours. In order to protect the well being of everyone, it was decided to reduce the championship to 54 holes. There were very few complaints! Early morning conditions were noticeably cooler on the final day, but the temperature shot up again in the late morning as the contenders battled it out on the increasingly fast and bouncy course. Of the two Oscars in contention, Sandiway's Oscar Craig got out of the blocks quickly and reached the turn in 34. Host club member Oscar Doran found trouble on the 5th and 8th holes but remained very much in contention going into the back nine along with defending champions Sam Johnson, Max Ranson (Dunham Forest), Sam Burton (Tytherington), Jack Duncalf (Sandiway) and the other half of the Doran brothers, Tom. The back nine would settle the 100th championship and Oscar Craig was playing excellent golf with very few errors. He posted a tremendous best of the day 68 to set a total of 211. Level par golf from the turn saw Oscar Doran come to the final hole needing an unlikely eagle to tie. After an excellent drive into the light rough, he could be excused for a tired-looking second which disappeared into the deep rough 90 yards short of the green. He was fortunate to find a reasonable lie but could do no better than a six, leaving Sandiway's Oscar Craig the 100th winner. The completion of the event without any serious health issues for players, volunteers and supporters was a relief to all. County President Marjorie Griffiths conducted an amusing and enjoyable presentation ceremony including a summary of past winners at Sandiway. She presented the Delamere Captain Mark Proctor with the traditional plaque to recognise the host club who she thanked for once again giving up their fabulous course for the three days of the championship Prizes went to Champion: Oscar Craig 211Runner-up: Oscar Doran 214 (Israel Sidebottom Trophy)Leading qualifier: Oscar Doran 139 (Darlington Trophy)Over 35's winner: Paul McFerran 219Leading Colt (under 23): Oscar Craig 211 (TPD Taylor Trophy)Team Champions: SandiwayRound 1 Sam Burton 69Round 2 Oscar Doran 68Round 3 Oscar Craig 68 Full results A buffet lunch had earlier been accompanied by a fascinating video covering the first decade of the championship created by our good friend David Lawton. Hazel Grove Golf club has been working hard for the past few years on the ‘Get Into Golf’ programme with current Lady Vice Captain Janet Metcalfe at the heart of the development. Janet has a terrific example of the success of the scheme through Alex White (Pictured). Janet outlined Alex’s path to golfing success: “Alex had never picked up a club four years ago before being enticed, with her sister to join Hazel Grove’s ‘Get Into Golf’ programme at a club where her mum was already a member and a keen golfer. “A keen sportswoman, Alex was struggling to find a substitute for her running hobby having damaged her knee. She was hooked from the start despite, as many do, thinking golf was just for the elderly and retired!  “She started with a high handicap but with regular practice and lessons saw improvement week on week. “Her HI crashed each year and she started to win the occasional weekly women’s competitions with great success coming in 2025 when she won two major events in the womens section. “That wasn’t the end, this year, despite a vastly reduced HI now at 24 she won the major Saturday club competition against a full field getting her name on the club honours board. “From novice to honours in 4 years! We are so proud of her and such a good role model for getting ladies and girls into golf.” *If your home club has news of people development or success please submit a story to communications@cheshiregolf.org.uk and we'll do our best to help inspire others. --- ## Girls Team enjoy match with Red Rose **Published:** Thursday, 25 June 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/girls-team-enjoy-match-with-red-rose Cheshire Girls took on old rivals Lancashire at Prestwich Golf Club which provided a challenging and well-presented course. His friends decided to hold a charity golf day at Ringway to celebrate his life and raise funds for the Moya Cole Hospice (formerly St Ann’s Hospice) in recognition of the care John received there during the final weeks of his life which was simply outstanding. Long-time friends of John and event organisers Phil Osborne and Neil Greenhalgh combined forces and said; “The golf competition was a Four Person Team and we were given prizes and auction items from a variety of sponsors and friends of John to add to the funds raised and given great support on and off the course by Ringway Golf Club. “John gave so much to Ringway. He poured his time and heart into developing the junior section, helping it to thrive. “And for nine years he captained and managed the Seniors Scratch team, always showing up – rain or shine- to support, encourage and inspire, which was much appreciated by all who played for the team. “John put in many years supporting the development of juniors at Ringway and coming back to enjoy the day, with 19 teams taking part were the ‘John’s Juniors’ team ( Cam Quealy, Ben Greenhalgh, Rory Entwistle and Charlie Whittaker) who were the top team with a remarkable 93 points and ‘NoNo’s Naughty Nibblers’ who were third. ”Another team enjoying the day were the classy ‘Cheshire Chicks’ team led by Cheshire President Marjorie Griffiths, Cheshire Girls Organiser Cathy Day, Cheshire Assistant Secretary Abby Baumber and Cheshire Senior Ladies Captain Tiff Fielden. “We had a great time in the evening, eating, drinking and reminiscing, along with members of John’s family, and the auction was run very effectively by Steve Hannon. “At the end of a fantastic day a total of £6,441.80 was raised for the charity and we were delighted to be able to present the cheque to Moya Cole Community Fundraiser George Bartram.” Pictured above Neil, George and Phil Copy & Images: Geoff Garnett --- ## Convincing win for Senior Men **Published:** Wednesday, 17 June 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/convincing-win-for-senior-men After their opening match defeat to Yorkshire Cheshire Senior Men’s team got back to winning ways with a comfortable victory against Durham, hosted in impeccable style by Prestbury GC. It is ten years since we last beat Yorkshire, but this seemed the ideal opportunity to do so again with our opponents having three key players on duty nearby at the Amateur Championship. We welcomed county champion Sam Johnson back to the team. He's completed his scholarship in the USA and fortunately has not returned with one of those annoying mid-Atlantic accents! Cole Self, fresh from a fabulous run of form also bolstered what looked a strong Cheshire contingent for a match that we had to win to maintain title-winning ambitions. Dan Heron (Royal Liverpool) also made a welcome return to the team having not appeared for several years. The morning foursomes began well with Self and Johnson recording a convincing win. Behind them we held leads in four matches and until the last hour it seemed we might record an unprecedented 5-1 lead. But Yorkshire have grit, and they surged back to limit their deficit to a single point at lunch. A sign of things to come? A winning start in the singles was vital for Cheshire. Sam and Cole duly obliged. With leads in several of the remaining ten matches, we only required a further 4 points to win and this began to look like a formality. Even those in the contingent of Yorkshire supporters were heard conceding that their prospects did not look good. Something you very rarely hear! But the White Rose stirred again, and in a dramatic 45 minutes turned around a handful of matches that they seemed destined to lose. Despite a gritty half from a losing position for Alfie Oakes (Wilmslow) and fabulous last-hole wins for Josh McMahon and Matty Griffiths, we were unable to hold back the tide of the Yorkshire revival and succumbed 9.5 to 8.5. If ever there was a painful loss, this was it. The team will no doubt learn much from this experience. We have a strong squad and some very talented youngsters pushing for places in the men's team which augers well for the future. But league aspirations are now gone for 2026 and the "Big 6" Northern Counties Qualifying in August, which takes us back to Northumberland, will no doubt be our major short-term objective. Heavy rain showers had been forecast for frequent times in the day but they kept away until the final group out led by Reddish Vale icon Dave ‘Two Breakfasts’ Sanders produced a deluge of rain which fortunately did not last too long. Great credit to all players for playing at a good pace throughout a long day superbly organised by Jerry Dixon and Bob Hamilton. The early leaders with 43 were John Coxon and Carl Smith (Runcorn) which was matched by David and Jimmy McCann (Mersey Valley) who for some time looked like being our first pair of brothers to win a Lifers comp. They were overtaken in the later stages by Steve Williams and Mark Cannings (Hartford). But as so often happens there was a real sting in the tail as the penultimate pairing of Gary Squire and Sam Wright, who had made the long trip from Eastham Lodge in West Cheshire, hit the top with an incredible haul of 48. This included five birdies between them on the back nine- not the usual standard of golf that life members are used to! Nearest-the-pin on the 4th hole was Prestbury's Steve Kimber whose tee shot rolled up to 6 inches short of the hole. Tiff Fielden, the Captain of Cheshire Senior Ladies, together with Hale Golf Club had a stunning success in hosting the Senior Ladies Championships over the May Bank Holiday weekend. The players were charmed by the reception they received and a course in fabulous condition. For those who had not played at Hale before they were surprised by the uniqueness of each hole and challenged by ‘every hole having an out-of-bounds and so many tricky greens’. The second proving to be tougher to hold the green than the fourth for all but the best players. Tiff said: “I thought that the weekend went very well and both players and guests were very complimentary about the course and the welcome they got from Hale GC. “The green keepers had done an amazing job considering that two weeks earlier we had to come off the course in a match with Cheshire Senior Men because of waterlogged greens. “Some players were even saying it had got too bouncy and found the pin positions very challenging. “I owe a big thank you to Fiona Walton and Sue Hughes the Cheshire organisers and the referees led by Phil Long.” The first day saw the qualifying round to reduce the field to 16 for the two knock-out days. The second day saw the Round of 16 and the quarter finals played to get down to the last four for the final day. Going through to the semi-finals were Sara Spencer (Heswall) v Jill Peters (Sandiway) and Barbara Jamieson (Heswall) v Caroline Berry (Royal Liverpool and Bromborough). In contrasting semi-finals Sara breezed through by 7/6 and in the other match it went to the 20th hole before Caroline won to set up a gripping final. Sara took an early lead and from then on it was nip-and-tuck in a real cliff-hanger going to the 18th green where a stunning chip set up Sara to take the Champions Trophy. They boys showed their intent as they raced into a 2-0 lead with wins for Jack Barnes (Romiley) one up and Jack Tennant (Disley) 3/1. Lee Turner then reduced the arrears with a one up win before the boys hit top form to establish a big lead. Bobby Moore (Houldsworth) halved with Neil Hickson (Ringway) and after Austin Eastwod (Caldy) had beaten Mark Hudson (Stockport) 2/1 there was a derby draw between Harvey Taylor and Iain Bartholomew (Prestbury) Victory was confirmed for the boys with wins for Will Furness (Ringway) 2/1, Freddie Wilcock (Royal Liverpool) 3/2 and Jonah Ashworth (Delamere Forest) 4/3 and a half from Harry Irvine (Caldy) with Rob Reid (Crewe) The Seniors picked up two consolation points with wins for Chris Turner (Portal) 2/1 and Tony Collinson (Reddish Vale) 3/1. In 2025 they hosted the championships for the first time in 15 years and doubled the attendance in 2026 (could be a national record) to enjoy a course in superb condition and great off-course hospitality. The main organiser for the competition was Andrew Henshall, former Cheshire President, former Wilmslow Captain and currently the Cheshire Boys manager. Andrew said: “I was given great help on a long day day by Fiona Woolley and Ewa Papis in the clubhouse organisation and other volunteers on the course and given great support by parents, teachers and Wilmslow staff and members/ “122 boys and 16 girls took part in the tournaments -team and individual nett and gross- and with the first ones off at 8am and the last ones off at 2.45pm, the event was well marshalled throughout the day by some of the Cheshire referees and prize giving was held on time at 7.15pm, with nearly 100 parents and players in attendance “There were some exceptional scores with seven boys and one girl shooting scores below par. “Noah Alexander (The Winsford Academy) was top in both the boys Nett and Gross competitions with scores of 67 and 63 and whilst Noah won both tournaments he couldn’t collect both prizes so the best gross was given to Wilfred Simcock (Wilmslow High School) 69. “Phoebe Henderson’s amazing score of nett 63, tipped the school’s team prize for the nett scores in favour of Cheadle Hulme School and scores of 71 gross by both Will Furness and Ben Davies enabled Ashton on Mersey School to win the gross team prize. Both Schools will now have their names put forward to play in the National Finals at Woodhall Spa on July 8 “The following players are also invited to the regional finals at Beamish Park on May 29th, Noah Alexander, Wilfred Simcock, Jack Barnes (Marple Hall), Shane Clayton (Great Sankey High School), Joshua Hockenhull-Wood (Tytherington High) and Ben Davies plus Morgan Bollam (Sandbach High), Esme Graham (West Kirby Grammar), Emilia Gravett (Kings School Chester) and Phoebe Henderson. “A great day for junior golf was concluded with the prizes being presented by Wilmslow Captain John Barnes and Lady Captain Hazel Baker.” Morgan Bollan with Lady Captain Hazel BakerCaptain John Barnes with Ben Davies and Will FurnessFiona, Andrew and Ewa Copy & images: Geoff Garnett --- ## U14s lose narrowly to Alsager and Astbury **Published:** Monday, 4 May 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/u14s-lose-narrowly-to-alsager-and-astbury *Cheshire Boys Under-14s team enjoyed a close contest as they lost by the smallest of margins, 4.5 to 5.5 to Astbury and Alsager at Astbury GC.Team manager Graham McCormack said: [ ]* Cheshire Boys Under-14s team enjoyed a close contest as they lost by the smallest of margins, 4.5 to 5.5 to Astbury and Alsager at Astbury GC. Cheshire Golf now has close to 1100 Life Members having recruited over 70 in the past year. A number of these made their debuts at the historic and superbly presented Chorlton course in a field of 164 players including seven ladies. One of them was Abby Baumber (Sandiway), the Cheshire assistant secretary, who was partnering Denise Burchell (Sandiway) the Cheshire Ladies Captain. Abby had a memorable moment as she holed out with a rescue club for a fantastic eagle on the par four 15th hole. Also in the field was Cheshire President Marjorie Griffiths (Ringway GC) who also enjoyed the day. Abby Baumber The Chorlton course was in fabulous condition for so early in the season and all of the 164 players were very complimentary about the smooth and quick greens in particular. Helsby Golf Club is the club with the biggest contingent of Life Members and they took the top two spots – Derek Evans and Brian Kennerley led in with 43 from Ric Harrison and Lawrie Holman who won a cpo on 40 from David Rathbone and Paul Shenton (Alsager Golf and Country Club) and Alan Tyler and Keith Jackman (Antrobus GC). It was also pleasing to have Chorlton Captain Garry Steed pop in to welcome the Life Members on what was a very busy day for his club and organiser Jerry Dixon. It was the first match for the new Captains Tiff Fielden (Hale GC) and Lee Turner (Northenden) and it was staged at Tiff’s home club which has a lovely 9-hole course and excellent clubhouse hospitality for players and officials to enjoy. After a bright start the weather changed and heavy rain flooded the greens unfortunately causing the match to be abandoned with the scores for the BB Match-play counting for the first nine holes. It was a close contest and the match scores were Cath Rawthore and Sara Spencer halving their match with Gareth Bradley and Guy Hindle. Then Jane Burke and Ali Hicks won their match against Richard Stockdale and John Smith four up. Caroline Berry and Tiff Fielden followed this with a two up win over Martin Keates and Chris Mitchelson. Maureen Richamond and Cathy Day halved with Lee Turner and Dave Nelson. Mark Hudson and Chris Massey won their match with Carole Ryder and Caroline McGeorge one up but it was not enough to stop the ladies smiling as they won by one point to take the bragging rights. A very sociable and competitive contest to get the season for both teams off to a good start! Heaton Moor Golf Club have seen this a [ ]* In recent years many golf clubs have seen a husband and wife team enjoying a year together as Captain and Lady Captain. Heaton Moor Golf Club have seen this a number of times with the latest pair being John and Jill Howarth who have just finished a very enjoyable and successful year together in the roles. But the club have now appointed two new top officials to set a unique record in the 133-year-old history of Heaton Moor. The new Captain is Mark Roberts and the President is his dad Mike and it may be a very rare appointment of father and son in these roles on the same year for clubs in the region. Mike was a very good footballer in his younger days first playing for Runcorn and just losing out in the FA Vase final. He then joined Macclesfield Town coaching and playing for his last three years and his final game for Macclesfield at the age of 40 was when they won the FA Vase. He then worked very hard with great effect at Heaton Moor serving time as Chairman then Captain and was a dynamic force in moving the club forward for many years. He introduced Mark to golf as an 11-year-old junior in 1988 and he also had plenty of impact on and off the course with a lowest handicap of five with a highlight of winning the club championship. Mark’s biggest impact at Heaton Moor came after he took over the role of Junior Organiser in 2018 when they had just five juniors. His hard work and innovative schemes saw the number of juniors grow to around 100 by 2021 with assistance from Jackie Hall who then took over his role. Jackie has kept up with the good work as the junior numbers have now grown to over 160, probably the biggest in Cheshire two of whom, including new Junior Captain Jacob Thorp, being selected for Cheshire Boys squads. Mike and Mark are affectionately known as Steptoe and Son at Heaton Moor and with Jacob and new Lady Captain Elaine Alkin, who has strong Irish family connection in golf, they intend to continue the great work being done at their club.. Linda said: “Kinder Mountain Rescue Team is the rescue team operating in the vicinity of Kinder Scout in the Peak District. The members of the team are all volunteers who give freely of their own time without remuneration, often putting themselves at risk during a call out. “Phil as Captain and myself, as Lady Captain last year chose it as our joint Captains’ Charity because it is a charity that relies entirely on voluntary donations and does not receive Government support. “This surprised me when I first became aware of it as the team, like other Mountain Rescue Teams around the country, does so much more than rescue people in difficulty on Kinder Scout. “Whilst this is of course a very important and significant part of their role they also support the other emergency services, the police, fire service and ambulance crews. “For example last year the team helped people affected by the floods in the Stockport area; they are called upon by the police to help search for missing and vulnerable people; they assist ambulance crews to locate and carry injured people from difficult terrain to give just a few examples. ”It is also a charity based locally to the golf club which was important to us. In fact from just about anywhere on the golf course you can get wonderful views of Kinder Scout! “We raised a total of £5,601 for the charity. Some of the events we held to raise funds were a Race Night, a Captains’ Golf Day which included an auction and a raffle, a Clarins skincare and make up evening, and several raffles. “I also designated two of the bunkers on the course as Lady Captain’s Charity bunkers and whenever a player hit their ball in the bunker they had to pay a donation to the charity. We also had a swear box! “Phil and I presented the cheque to Kinder Mountain Rescue Team who were represented by their Chairperson Alison Wild and Assistant Leader Neil Woodhead. “Phil and I have to give thanks to the club’s Events Committee who gave us so much support throughout the year organising the events. But most of all we have to thank the club’s members, families and friends without whose support and generosity we would not have been able to raise so much money.” Outside the clubhouse overlooking Kinder Scout Left to right Philip, Linda, Neil Woodhead and Alison Wild Copy & Photo’s courtesy of Geoff Garnett --- ## Fantastic charity effort by Portal Captains **Published:** Saturday, 18 April 2026 **URL:** https://www.cheshiregolf.org.uk/blog/charity-portal *The Captain Davie Thompson and Lady Captain Amy Lester of Portal Golf Club were delighted to present a cheque for £27,910.68  to the representatives of Age UK Cheshire at their club’s [ ]* The Captain Davie Thompson and Lady Captain Amy Lester of Portal Golf Club were delighted to present a cheque for £27,910.68  to the representatives of Age UK Cheshire at their club’s AGM.
