Andrew Murray is a renowned member of the PGA, a former European Tour player for many years and now very involved with TV and BBC Radio Five Live Radio golf commentary work connected to golf. He's also booked as MC for the Cheshire Golf dinner on October 9th.
He also organises special golf days and golf trips and one of his main events each year is the Andrew Murray Pro Am Charity Day which began at Didsbury GC 35 years ago and since then has raised approximately £520k for his selected charities.
The first one was held at Didsbury where Andrew began his golf as a junior and is now a life member and a regular player in the Saturday competitions. The event has also been hosted at Portal, Lymm, Stockport and Bramhall where he started his professional career and they have hosted it for the last ten years.
But this was the final one and drew many of Andrew’s friends in golf to play in the 28 teams of four each led by a top professonal.
The charities benefitting over the years mainly supported children including for 35 years Together Trust a local charity for disadvantaged children, Hope House Kids Hospice in Oswestry and the Prostate Cancer Support group as they are based in North East Cheshire.
Andrew’s team included Mark Chapman, Alistair Bruce-Ball and Rob Nothman all part of the BBC Radio 5 Live Golf Team and Mark now is the front man for BBC’s Match of the Day.
The players enjoyed good weather and an excellent course with plenty of fantastic hospitality from Bramhall GC.
Andrew said: “I would like to thank many people for their help and support over the years and the final day – the pros, guests, clients and my kids- all four were here, Matt From the USA, Hannah from Vancouver, Ben From Cambridge and Tom in Hale – they all started by doing goody bags 35 years ago.”
“The top three teams on the day were 1 Mitsibishi Electric, pro Sam Connor, 2 Logo Shack pro James Freeman 3 Waste and Washroom pro Phil Archer.
“It was a massive team effort and lots of folk helped and it was also a good send-off for my PA Sandra on her retirement.”
