Double delight for Chorlton

Double delight for Chorlton

The Balfour and Houldsworth Golf Committee organises top competitions every year for four categories and members of clubs within 25 mile radius of Manchester Town Hall are eligible to enter, including over 30 Cheshire clubs.

They are the Balfour Cup, The Houldsworth Cup, the GS Lancashire Trophy and the Seniors Balfour Cup.

The B and H was set up in 1897 by prominent politicians, entrepreneurs and golfers in the Stockport area-the Hon AJ Balfour and Sir William Henry Houldsworth in 1897 to encourage and promote amateur golf in the area.

Originally the competitions were just for the Balfour and Houldsworth Cups for male players and the GS Lancashire was added in 1921 for mixed pairs and the Senior Cup in 2005.

The B and H committee has no home base and relies on clubs to host the competitions each year and are always looking for clubs to host their top class competitions each year.

This year the hosts for the GS Lancashire Cup were Chorlton Golf Club who were delighted to host the event and provided a terrific course and superb clubhouse facilities and catering.

The competition sees the scores from the top lady and top man on each hole aggregated to provide the Stableford results.

The day was completed in memorable style by Chorlton who had the winning team of Steve Clare, Captain Garry Steed, Monica Parsonage and Jeanette Freeman 89 from Pat Jackson and Jane Jolley (Worlsey GC) and John S Griffiths and Nick Telfer (Chorlton) 86 and Michael Biddie, Lee Hodgkinson, Niki Bonell and Jo Henderson (all Malkins Bank) 83
