The EGU Northern Counties Boys Championship held at Arcot Hall on 16th July was won by Lancashire Boys for the third successive year. The Cheshire Boys put up an excellent performance and finished in a very creditable second place, two shots ahead of Yorkshire Boys, the first round leaders. Halfway through the second rounds a very close finish appeared to be in prospect. However, the Lancashire team returned some excellent late scores to take themselves to the top of the leaderboard. There were some fine performances from the Cheshire team, in particular Josh Evans (72, 72), Tom Boys (75, 71) and Oliver Carr (73, 75).

This win is the third in four years and gives Cheshire the opportunity to represent the North in the English Golf Union County Team Championship at Trentham Golf Club on October 7th to 9th.

In addition to the 6 players selected for Fairhaven, the selectors have at their disposal 6 other golfers who have previously won the EGU Team Championship as well as other newly age qualified and keen match players

Michael BedfordCheshire Matchplay Championship
Michael Bedford of Prestbury is the 2008 Match-play Champion having beaten Alex Hogben of Ringway 6 & 4 in the final at Bramall Park.

Michael, a former Boys Champion in 2006, is well-versed in Bramall Park having only recently moved from there to Prestbury. In the end, Michael was a worthy winner although Alex could reasonably claim the “golfing gods” were not with him in the final match of the inevitably long grueling competition which the Match-play entails.

Semi-finalists were Kevin Kean of Ashton on Mersey and Iain Davie of Hazel Grove both of whom only gave way on the 18th hole.

Conditions were dry but gusty on the final day adding just that little bit of difficulty. The course was presented in first-class condition and was a credit to all at Bramall Park involved in the Championship

President's Newsletter
The newly elected President, Ted Leather, welcomes readers and gives some insight into recent developments within the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs in his Newsletter

County Junior Golf Policies
We are all very conscious of the focus given these days to "Child Welfare Issues", the EGU and its Partner Organisations have been considering for several years now, how this topic should be best managed within County and Club Golf. A new Guidance Booklet "Safeguarding Children in Golf", has recently been supported by the Counties and approved for publication by the EGU, it should start to be circulated from March 2008. The Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs, previously introduced a series of "Draft Policy and Procedures", which have now been developed into a comprehensive "Junior Golf Operations Manual". This document has been approved by the County Executive at its Meeting on the 5th February 2008 and will therefore form the framework of future County Junior Golf Activities. The document can be viewed via the link below, and it will shortly be available on request to the County Secretary. It should be recognised that Juniors entries to County Events will be the subject of these provisions.

Rules Revisions 2008
The County has prepared a short guide to the principal rule changes which have become effective on the 1st January 2008, this may be useful for Club Competition Committees in particular.  Whilst the main changes at first sight may not appear extensive, a number of important points which were previously covered by Decisions are now incorporated within the actual Rules. The note includes some comments on Conforming Drivers. The County would draw to the attention of all Championship Entrants that the Conditions of the Competition for these events will include the additional requirement that any Driver Clubheads used must appear on the R&A's list of Conforming Driver Heads; ref Note to Rule 4-1. Competition Committees should be aware that the R&A has published an Addendum Sheet on their website, giving notice of incorrect wording in Decision 13-4/38, plus a couple of minor typographical corrections

2008 Junior Golf Seminar
Cheshire are pleased to announce that the CUGC will be running a Seminar this year, concerned with a wide range of topics of interest to "Club Junior Organisers" and "Club Management". The Seminar will be held at Warrington GC on Wednesday the 2nd of April, Warrington has been selected for this event as it is fairly central to the County. We very much appreciate the support of Warrington GC, in making their facilities available to us.
Invitations will go out in early February, to all Affiliated Clubs within the County, the suggestion being that the Club Junior Organiser and his Club Captain or other member of the Club Management should attend. We anticipate that representatives from the CCLGA, the EGU and our County Coaching Staff will also be with us on the evening.
The main theme will be to encourage Clubs to bring forward issues of interest and concern, providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and the results of their own Club experiences. A number of short Presentations dealing with the main areas of current interest will also be given. The evening will commence with tea or coffee being available from 6.30pm, for a 7.00pm start, some refreshments will be provided at the end of the formal proceedings providing the opportunity for individual discussions.
We very much look forward to seeing you there

Paul Waring at CarnoustiePaul Waring
Cheshire are delighted to congratulate Paul Waring from Bromborough on his recent achievement at the PGA Qualifying School. Paul had a distinguished amateur career from his days with the Cheshire Boys, subsequently making 16 appearances for the full County Squad, later becoming a regular member of the England Squad. Paul was Cheshire Boys Champion in 2002 and was the English Amateur Champion in 2005.  Following his appearance at Carnoustie last year in the Open Championship and just missing out for a final place in the Walker Cup Team, Paul turned Professional and achieved excellent results during the closing stages of the 2007 Tour. Subsequently, taking on the rigours of the PGA Tour Qualifying process, Paul went on to secure his European Tour Card for 2008, tied for 27th place at San Roque GC on 3 under par, over the 6 rounds of the final Q School Stage. With around 900 hopefuls starting the Q School, success here is success indeed!  Paul is the first Cheshire County Player since Jamie Donaldson to obtain his card for the main European Tour and we wish him every success in his future career

Coaching Initiatives for 2008
As a trial exercise designed to further develop the effectiveness of our Junior Programme, Cheshire will be taking a group of 12 boys to Son Parc Menorca during the February Half Term for a period of intensive Coaching under the direction of our Senior County Coaches Alan Thompson and Peter Barber. Also new for 2008 is the introduction of a new Under 14 Coaching Squad of 12 boys, most of whom were selected as a result of our Driving Range Trials carried during November 2007. This programme will be carried out by Peter Barber and Rob Thompson during the current pre-season period, Cheshire are very much appreciative of support from the EGU which has allowed us to introduce this particular new development. David Horsey
David Horsey at Walker Cup
David Horsey from Styal Golf Club played in the 2007 Walker Cup. The first Cheshire player to do so and a great credit to the County. His rise to prominence was quite spectacular and in such a relatively short time. A summary of his amateur golf career is given on the this page.
Cheshire wish him well in his future professional career
