The under 16 squad was first formed in 2014 and played 6 matches against Golf Club’s junior teams in the same format as the Under 14 team.
In 2015 the squad played their first match against another County, Lancashire Under 16s at Ringway and also against the Cheshire Seniors at Wilmslow as well as matches against the Under 14s and Cheshire Girls plus 2 club’s junior teams.
In 2016 there were fixtures against Lancashire, Staffordshire and Yorkshire Under 16s, as well as games against the Cheshire Seniors, Cheshire Ladies Seniors and Cheshire Under 14s.
In 2017 we have the same set of fixtures and plans have been made to add a game against Derbyshire Under 16s in 2018.
The team is led and selected by Andrew Henshall and David Durling and includes players who have played for the Under 14 team in earlier years.
The Under 16 players have the opportunity to gain useful matchplay experience before going into the Cheshire Boys Squad and it is this progression through the teams, that will help strengthen the quality of the teams Cheshire are able to put out in future years. Many of those who have played for the Boys Team in the past have gone on to play for the County Team.
The Under 16s have the help of two of the top coaches in the County; Peter Barber (Didsbury) and John Heggarty (Royal Liverpool). They are helping the boys with coaching sessions throughout the year and accompany the team to selected matches, giving them feedback on how best to improve their talent in a matchplay situation.

Sunday 13th August v Cheshire Senior Men’s Team (Lost 4.5 to 7.5)
The seniors once again showed the Under 16 players how to play matchplay, never giving up and coming back to halve two of the matches on the last hole in the morning, leaving the foursomes level at 2 points each. The afternoon singles matches were dominated by some fine play by the older players and although nearly all the Under 16s had good games only Jack Muir and James Dewhurst won their games with Sam Long, Greg Osborne and Dan Gibson losing on the 18th green. Kieran Underwood staged a great comeback to halve his match on the last hole, but by then the result was not in doubt with the seniors winning 5.5 to 2.5 in the afternoon.
Monday 14th August v Staffordshire Under 16s (Lost 3.5 to 6.5)
On what proved to be a difficult course, both from accessibility and playability, the Under 16s forgot the basic principles of matchplay, and that is to remember that the course is the same for their playing opponents, as themselves. Instead they all wanted to play far too many risky shots, and this cost them holes at vital stages in their matches. The exceptions were Jake Hibbert and Nathan Newton who both played well and won easily, and James Dewhurst who made a terrific fight back and won on the 18th green with most of the players then watching. Sadly Alex Lamb who was playing his first game for this team, wasn’t as lucky on the last hole, only halving it to end up halving his match. Sam Long was also unfortunate to lose his game on the last hole, but the rest did not perform to their usual high standards that have seen all of them have some great medal rounds this year. Final score 6.5:3.5 to Staffordshire Under 16s.
Friday 18th August v Cheshire Senior Ladies Team (Lost 1 to 3)
The Senior Ladies must have been delighted when they realised that the length of course the Under 16 Boys were playing was over 7,000 yards and that the one they were playing was only 5,900 yards and that they were getting courtesy shots. Needless to say the games were much closer than last year and although the Under 16s pairing of Greg Osborne and Nathan Newton won the opening match, the rest of the team suffered from having to give shots. Despite some fantastic golf none of the remaining team pairings could match the Senior Ladies. Special thanks go to their Captain Jan McGowan and Jenny Turner for organising this event after the thrashing they were given last year by the Under 16s, and special mention should go to Jan Dooley who had three birdies and an eagle on her way to victory over James Dewhurst and Ben Brookes, this pair did nothing wrong all game, and when they appeared to be winning the game back found themselves up against Jenny Turner (a late stand in) who got 2 nett birdies on the back 9. Final Score 3:1 to the Senior Ladies.
Monday 21st August v Yorkshire Under 16s (Lost 5 to 7)
With John Heggarty in attendance for both the practice round the day before and the actual match, it was a pity that some of the team didn’t heed all the advice given to them by John as this match was very close and all the games were much closer than some of the scores suggest. Apart from the first foursome game where the Cheshire pair of Oscar Doran and Remy Miller went 3 down after 3 holes and never quite got it back, the rest of the day was marked by some great golf which included a continuous stream of birdies and occasional eagles from both sides. The morning foursomes saw a win for Sam Long and Nathan Newton, and a close defeat for Ryan Owens and Jack Muir who lost on the 18th. This left Yorkshire in the ascendency at lunch with a lead of 3:1. Having some England Under 16s in their lead players in the afternoon, they got off to a good start winning the first two singles matches in the afternoon to go into a 5:1 lead. But then the Cheshire Under 16s started to come back and after wins for Sam Long, Nathan Newton, Jack Muir and Greg Osborne and a close loss on the last for Ryan Owen, the score stood at 6:5 to Yorkshire with just one match out on the course. Unfortunately for Liam Mann he was up against a tough competitor and when Tom Kelly came out of the bunker at the side of the 18th to about 6” from the flag the game was over. This meant the comeback that Cheshire Boys had inflicted on Yorkshire Boys the previous Friday (when several players from Yorkshire Under 16 team had also played) was not repeated. Final score Yorkshire Under 16s won 7:5
Friday 1st September v Cheshire Under 14s (Won 4.5 to 3.5)
Having let one of our squad members, Dan Fosbrook, play in the lead position for the Under 14s and then see him win on the last green, thankfully the rest of the team buckled down to the task of keeping the up and coming Under 14s in their place in this game at Macclesfield. The course was in great condition and there were wins for Ryan Owen and Alex Lamb in some of the top order matches. From Cheshire’s point of view it is good to see so much talent available to the County and great to see some promising players representing the Under 14s, as some of them could well be playing for the Under 16s next season. All 16 boys appeared to enjoy the day and the support from the board members was much appreciated
Sunday 17th September v Lancashire Under 16s (Lost 5 to 7)
Once again, we played the foursomes matches in the morning poorly, and Sam Long and Nathan Newton who had played so well together against Yorkshire Under 16s were seen off very quickly by their Lancashire opponents. Oscar Doran and James Ashfield played well together to win, whilst Jake Hibbert and Remy Miller were unfortunate to lose on the last green. The results from the singles matches in the afternoon, started with Jake Hibbert, Remy Miller, Sam Long and Greg Osborne from Cheshire winning the first 4 games to finish to establish a 5:3 lead, but then results changed with Lancashire winning the next 2 games and ended with Cheshire losing the last two matches on the last green, one to a birdie and one because of a poor three putt by our player, this gave Lancashire a winning score of 7:5
Spectators are always welcome at the matches
