Cheshire Foursomes
Foursomes Champions
Victory Trophy Winners

The Seventy Seventh Cheshire County Foursomes Championship was held at a very blustery Prenton Golf Club on Sunday the 29th August 2010.  The day started pretty grey and conditions rapidly deteriorated to become most unpleasant with occasional very heavy rain and a wind which gusted significantly, all making playing conditions extremely testing, to say the least. Nevertheless a good field of thirty two teams survived the morning to enjoy rather more pleasant conditions during the afternoon round. Despite the poor weather and previous rainfall the condition of the Prenton course was exceptionally good, clearly reflecting the careful preparation from the staff at Prenton. The County Foursomes Champions with rounds of 75 + 76 = 151, were Prestbury’s Daniel Young and James Newton, a very creditable performance in view of the conditions. Both Daniel and James are regular County Boys Squad players. Runners Up were the local Prenton pair of Greg Jackson and Luke Mighall with 81 + 72 = 153. In the “Handicap” Victory Trophy, previously a winner in 1990, John Done of Frodsham GC with his son Steven from Royal Liverpool, a winner of the Scratch Foursomes in 1997, playing off a combined handicap of 8, took first place with nett 79 + 70 = 149. Runners Up for the Victory Trophy were Chorlton’s Phil Bolton playing with Richard Mallard, off a combined handicap of 4, returning nett 73 + 78 = 151. The Foursomes Championship completed a most successful week for Prestbury Golf Club, where their Junior Squad, led by Daniel Young,  won the County Junior Team Championship last Wednesday at Stockport Golf Club. Results

Cheshire Junior Club Championship
Prestbury Team with the President & Ian Gemmel

The first dedicated Cheshire Junior Club Team Championship was held at Stockport Golf Club on Wednesday 25th August.  On a magnificently prepared Stockport Course and fortunately under pretty reasonable weather conditions, 33 Teams representing a very significant body of Cheshire Junior Golf returned many excellent scores, approximately one third of the players scored level par and better.  Each Club Team was based on three players and the field included three girls, one of whom Katie Rawthorpe from Sale GC scored 39points and receives a salver for the best individual girls performance.  The format of the Championship is based on the EGU National Junior Club Finals, the intention being that next year our Cheshire Champion Junior Club will represent the County at the Notional Finals to be held at Woodhall Spa.  This year’s Champions were Prestbury Golf Club (Dan Young Scr, 40 points; Joe Armitt 3, 39 points; and Joshua Garside 2, 38 points) with a Team Score from the best two scores, of 79 points, received the Uren Trophy and commemorative salvers.  Runners up were Wilmslow GC with 78 points. Milo Keely from Wilmslow, playing off a 6 handicap returned the overall best score of the day with 43 points, as Milo receives a runners up salver, the salver for the individual boys score goes to Oliver Henderson from Caldy GC, off 4 handicap Oliver returned 39 poiints.  The scores reflect that Junior Golf in Cheshire is in pretty reasonably shape.  Overall Team Scores. Cheshire Junior Championship
The 27th Cheshire Junior Championship (ie the U16’s) was played at the delightful Wirral Ladies Course on Thursday 28th July.  After a gloomy start the weather picked up to match the excellent performance of the County’s youngest rising stars, on the relatively short nevertheless very exacting Wirral Ladies course, which was presented in superb condition.  Our thanks go to the Captain Angela Smith, the Wirral Ladies Officials, Members  and staff who were all most welcoming and contributed to the success of the day.  Praise also has to go to the players who ranged upwards from nine years old, considerable golf skills were on display with very good scores being returned, especially of note however was the pace with which the game was played, consistently with a good attitude and spirit; a credit to their families and Clubs.  The 2010 County Junior Champion was Andrew Crosby a 4 handicap player from Caldy, with a gross 69.  Runner Up was Sandiway’s 3 handicapper Matthew Darwent who returned a gross 70.  The Under 14 Champion was Samuel Turner from Stockport GC, playing off 8 Samuel scored a gross 74.  The Overall Nett prize went to 12 year old, 26 handicap Nick Whitehead from Alder Root with a nett score of 63, runner-up in the nett category was 9 year old Archie Palmer from Stamford GC, off 28 who scored a nett 65.  The css for the event was 66.  Congratulations to all the boys who took part and our thanks to the their parents for all the support and assistance which they provide.  Full results and pictures (To Follow) from the Championship can be found on the links below.

Cheshire Boys Championship
Oliver Carr
The 46th Cheshire Boys Championship for 2010 was held at Delamere Forest on Friday 23rd July, under near perfect golfing conditions.  The course was in superb condition and thanks to the recent rainfall was playing rather more receptively than was the case for the Mens County Championship held two weeks ago, when the run of the course and speed of the greens provided a very severe challenge.  The conditions were ably matched by many of our gifted County Boys with numerous sub-par rounds being returned in the morning, including a Course equalling record of 65, by Hazel Grove’s Fraser Macleod, who led at lunchtime by one stroke from Heswall’s Oliver Carr.  Fraser’s score puts him in a strong position to represent the County in the Daily Telegraph, Junior Golfer of the Year Tournament, Finals held annually in Abu Dabai, currently Fraser’s score of 6 under css leads the published results currently available.  In the afternoon Oliver a rising England Boy International Star produced a second low scoring round of 67 to become the County Boys Champion with an 11 under par total of 133; Fraser repeated his previous placing as runner up on 137 with Kyle Evans from Prenton third on 139.  We are very appreciative of the dedication of all the boys who took part in the Championship this year and particularly the support of their parents.  As always, we remain most grateful to the Members, Management and Staff of Delamere who for the splendid reception and assistance which they provide each year in staging this event.
