Dear Member,
Welcome to a new year of golf in 2010. The Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs website gives useful information about the Cheshire Golf, including previous year's match results and details of the County Executive and their membership of various committees. You will see that Colin Shadbolt (Bramall Park) has moved from chairing the Junior Committee to take over the Tournament Committee. Colin has done a magnificent job for 5 years with the Juniors but wanted a change and has agreed to chair Tournaments. In his place Ray Simm (Caldy) will take over as Chairman of the Juniors and have Mike Jones (Chester) as Manager of the Boys Team to help and assist him. John Kidd (Delamere Forest), last year's President, will chair the Dinner Committee and Duncan Macphee (Warrington) has agreed to continue as Chairman of the Finance Committee. After many years as the Honorary Treasurer John Allen (Prestbury) will be standing down in 2011. I'm delighted to have John as Treasurer in my year and on behalf of all the members of the County would like to thank him for all his hard work over the years. Gordon Edwards (Bromborough) remains as Chairman of the Standard Scratch Committee and will continue to oversee the re-rating of all the courses in the County.
The County Membership Meetings have been a huge success under the Chairmanship of Les Jowsey (Stockport) and our old friend Harry Carlisle who does a wonderful job as the Membership Secretary. It may interest you to know that out of 7 venues this year 5 are already fully subscribed. Dr Chris Peterson (Wallasey) continues as Chairman of Selectors and together with the Team Captain Ron Harrison (Romiley) will hope for a winning season from our players. The Deputy President, Roger Fielding (Ringway) will hold a watching brief for all Senior activities this year. The Senior Team have been our most successful side and narrowly lost to Kent in the County Finals last year.At national level Elwyn Ellis (Prestbury) as been proposed as President of the English Golf Union and hopefully will be elected in February. This is a great honour for the County and Elwyn himself, and I'm sure the whole County wish him a happy and successful year in office. With Nigel Evans (Sandiway) Chairman of the English Golf Union, Steven Buckley (Ringway) Chairman of the SSS and Handicapping Committee and Bob Meston (Prestbury) Chairman of the Mens Selection Committee, Cheshire is well represented at national level.
The County Card which at £18 (£12 for Life members) gives excellent value for money now includes all counties and clubs in England who are members of the scheme. Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the County website which provides a wide source of information about Cheshire golf.
We will hopefully have better weather than last year and I wish you all great success with all your trials and tribulations on the golf course.
Ian S Niven
