President's Newsletter to Clubs and Life Members of the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs

Dear Fellow Golfers,

Welcome to the CUGC  Website. Herein is news and information about mens amateur golf in Cheshire:

Life Membership continues to increase which is not surprising at the cost of a one off fee of £40. This entitles Life Members to play in the Members’ Days competitions which are held throughout the playing season at different clubs throughout the County - 7 per year.
Also a discount on the price of Association Cards  (currently £12 for life members) and which allows a reduction of up to 50% of the normal green fee on approximately 80 of the County courses.

We have a number of changes to our Executive Committee this year with Les Jowsey (Stockport) taking over membership Chairman from Eric Roylance, and Bob Meston (Prestbury)  in charge of Selection. Ron Harrison (Romiley) is appointed County Captain and will lead the County squad from which both the County and the ‘A’ teams  will be selected.

All the courses in the county are to be re-rated over the next three years which is quite a task as it takes two or three persons 4 to 5 hours per course. I ask you to be understanding when your course is being re-rated

We have a very active Junior section under the guidance of Colin Shadbolt (Bramall Park) and Junior Team Manager – Mike Jones (Chester). They both devote a great deal of time and effort to the continuing development of our juniors. Mike is also responsible for the North West Area coaching regime  for the EGU.

I am very pleased to welcome ‘Chafes Solicitors’ as our new sponsors this year and we look forward to a successful partnership. See the link to their website.

Please note that we now have a new office address and contact details and the office is only manned during normal office hours at best. Our Secretary, Steve Foster, travels extensively during the playing season and the office is not normally manned when he is away. However he can be contacted by phone or preferably e-mail and which he will respond to without undue delay.

Regular updates are posted on the website and I would encourage those who are able, to visit it regularly. I look forward to meeting many of you during the year at social or golfing functions and I wish you all a successful and enjoyable year.

Ted Leather
