Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs To Apply
Conforming Driver Rule For All Its 2005 Events
The
Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs (CUGC) is to apply the Conforming Driver rule, as
directed by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and the English Golf
Union, for all its major championships as from 1st January 2005.
The R & A’s Championship Committee decided to introduce restrictions on driving clubs at all its championships and international matches from 2005, a ruling the CUGC has decided to follow and apply to CUGC championships and tournaments in 2005, excluding the Handicap Championship and the U16 & U15 Junior Championship.
The R & A’s directive states: Driving clubs must not have a characteristic time greater the 257 microseconds when measured on pendulum testing apparatus approved by R&A Rules Limited – see also Appendix II, 5a of the Rules of Golf. A list of non-conforming clubs is available from the R & A website www.randa.org
The ruling is also not being enforced on club competitions unless clubs decide otherwise.
EGU events affected include:
The Brabazon Trophy; Seniors Championship; McGregor Trophy, Carris Trophy; English Amateur Championship; Reid Trophy; Logan Trophy; Boys County Finals; Champion Club; County Champions Tournament; Men’s County Finals; and Seniors County Finals.
For most competitions and all recreational play, there will continue to be no limitations relating to driving clubs on ‘spring-like’ effect until 1st January 2008. However, the decision to extend the application of the Conforming Driver rule to top Amateur events from 2005 sends a clear reminder to players of all abilities that the new Rule limiting ‘spring-like’ effect will be introduced.
